1997 sport
I have a 1997 explorer sport. This thing has always given us problems. It has had the engine replaced, 3 transfer cases, adn it just blew its 3rd transmission! I have invested too much money in it to junk it so I guess I'll have to replace yet another trans. To get to my point, I want to find a used trans but I am not sure what one I need. I know there have been a couple different 4.0L sohc engines as well as transmissions. Someone please help me out.

97 used the 5R55E for either 4.0L (OHV or SOHC).

FWIW, my 97 is running well with the original engine (OHV), transmission and TC. 119k miles.

i second the 5r55e... my ex with 138,x.. original tranny original t-case, original 5.0 motor

EDIT:to clear up i have the 4R70W

Guess I'm just lucky that way:D. I have heard a lot of people never have any problems with there explorers. Then I also meet a few who have nightmares.

its that way with every vehicle... its just maintnence and luck

There is no doubt that they have a higher rate of transmission failures than other vehicles, but the 5R55E is better than the older A4LD in the first gen Explorer. The 4R70W used for the 5.0 is a stronger trans than the 5R55E, but won't work with the engine control system used for the 97 4.0L.

I dont think you don't have a 5r55e with that motor, you have a 4r70w - big difference.

Jersey...where in North Jersey are you? I can recommend a trans shop that does phenomenal work. Dirty? North Jersey is like the 2nd wealthiest area in the US...some BEAUTIFUL towns (I guess if you live in a 5 million dollar mansion it has to be kind of nice!!!) NJ gets a bad reputation for whatever reason. I've lived in 5 states, now being upstate NY, and it is the rudest, trashiest place, hands down. PA is my favorite next to FL. This shop gives a 2-year, 24,000 mile warranty, too. Around here all you can find is a 1-year, 12,000 mile warranty. Stinks.

Newark NJ, hence the dirtyness. Now I split my time between Long Valley/Chester(not dirty) and Mount Pocono PA. Also lived in West palm beach Florida and hated that place more than anything. If you could recomend a good reasonably priced shop in Jersey I'd appreciate it. It will definitley need to be rebuilt or replaced cause I guess something broke inside and jammed the whole thing up. Unfortunately not a sensor or linkage. Thanks a lot.
