My brake lights went out a couple of days ago. It was fine one moment during lunch, but after lunch it seems to have gone out. A police officer was kind enough to let me know that it was out.

I did the following:

1. Inspect the left rear lights - all of them, and they were all fine. I didn't think it was likely the bulbs were out because none of the brake lights are lighting.

2. Checked all the fuses that were anywhere close to being labelled a "brake" or "light" function. Double / triple checked, and all relevant fuses are fine.

3. checked the brake sensor attached to the brake pedal, and it too seems to be fine. Wiggled / jiggled and no effect on brake lights.

4. Finally, I swapped out the Multi-function switch (MFC), because it had been smoking before. Used a brand new MFC from the dealer, and after the swap, brake lights are still out.

I'm out of ideas at this point. Will take it to the dealer to troubleshoot unless someone here has any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

corotion on bulb leads?

Check this thread out. It covers Gen 1 and 2 brake light problems. I suggest pulling the connector of the brake light switch and jumpering it. If the lights come on, then the problem is either the switch or it's adjustment. Read thru the thread for more info: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=251477

Thanks a lot, I will check that out and try out the suggestions.

BTW no corosion on the bulb leads or anything.

lots of posts indicate that the problem can be associated with the connector near the bumper associated with the trailer "pig tails".

Thanks all, it was the brake stoplight switch.

i replaced my stoplight switch about a month ago. a truck driver was nice enough to scream at me for having no lights... at least it wasnt a cop.
