Upon shutting off my 1994 explorer after it has reached operating temp it seems to be flooded when I try to restart it. Black smoke and fuel smell out of exhaust. I am about to purchase new injectors in hopes to fix the problem. Does anyone think it could be anything else? Is there a cold start injector that may be causing the flooding or just leaky injectors? I did recently have the system professionally cabon cleaned. It seems to be worse than before. I've dumped about $1800.00 into fixing this problem alrady to no avail. HELP

First did you run a code scanner on it? First thing to do when ever you work on the ex. Second I would hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail ad see what it says- especially after shut down. Do a leak down test on the the fuel system to check for a leaking injector, or maybe a bad FPR.

Pull the plugs- do they all look the same? Might try to listen to the engine after it shuts down with a probe, may be able to hear a leak( friend o mine recommended this to me dont know if it works or not- sounds like a decent idea though.)

flooded

You may want to check the engine temp sensor. I dont mean the one that reads the coolant. This sensor tell the computer what the engine temp is if cold it adds more fuel at startups. My wife's Honda did that I changed the wires and plugs. It has ran every since then about 5 months. When u start it up try holding pedal (gas) 1/4 down see if it will start better.

FIXED

I just wanted to let you know that I got the problem fixed. There is a temperature sensor that tells the computer if the engine is hot or cold. It was bad therefore causing the computer to send extra gas for a cold start and flooding it. I hope this helps
