When you re-fill the engine with oil, fill it with 1 less quart than is specified for a complete refill (i.e.: if 5 quarts are specified, initially fill with 4 quarts). Start the engine and watch the oil pressure gage; it should indicate oil pressure after a few seconds delay (no more than 10). This is then when you look for leaks as mentioned above. Now shut-off the engine and wait at least 3 minutes for the oil level to stabilize (remember, the engine is cold) and check the dipstick. Complete the oil fill to bring the oil level up to the full mark on the dipstick. The objective here is to NOT overfill the engine with oil which can cause problems.
The reason that the final amount of oil required to completely fill the engine can vary is because oil filters do not all have the same volume.
Finally, clean any drips or splashes on the engine, clean your tools, and dispose of the used engine oil and filter at a recycling center (call you local waste management authority if you don't know where this is).
By the way, not only will your father be proud of you, we are all proud of you, too.
Welcome to the group and Good Luck!
