Are you having problems taking the filter off? To remove the filter you need to turn it counter clockwise. Most Fram filters come with arrows showing you the direction to turn the filter to put it on. If the filter is tight, the you might try going to a auto parts dealer and look for a cup which connects to a rachet and fit to the bottom of the filter. I have one and it helps alot with those tight filters. You should place a container or a oil change box under the filter area before you remove the filter to catch the oil that will spill out of the filter. Once you have the filter removed, clean the surface area of the filter mount. Dip your finger in some fresh oil and wet the rubber gasket of the new filter then screw the filter on. Hand tighten the filter. I am assuming that you will be changing the oil as well. After filling the engine with oil (roughly 5qts to a complete change), run the engine and check for leaks and check the oil level. Your Dad will be proud of you!

Make sure you check the old filter gasket is not stuck on the engine.

When you re-fill the engine with oil, fill it with 1 less quart than is specified for a complete refill (i.e.: if 5 quarts are specified, initially fill with 4 quarts). Start the engine and watch the oil pressure gage; it should indicate oil pressure after a few seconds delay (no more than 10). This is then when you look for leaks as mentioned above. Now shut-off the engine and wait at least 3 minutes for the oil level to stabilize (remember, the engine is cold) and check the dipstick. Complete the oil fill to bring the oil level up to the full mark on the dipstick. The objective here is to NOT overfill the engine with oil which can cause problems.
The reason that the final amount of oil required to completely fill the engine can vary is because oil filters do not all have the same volume.
Finally, clean any drips or splashes on the engine, clean your tools, and dispose of the used engine oil and filter at a recycling center (call you local waste management authority if you don't know where this is).

By the way, not only will your father be proud of you, we are all proud of you, too.

Welcome to the group and Good Luck!
