2002 Ford Explorer Eddie
So I have a 2002 explorer Eddie Bauer 4.6 v8 and we'll I replaced timing kit oil pump 3 lifters and all my gaskets well now my engine after cranking it has a knock and i was told it was the wrist pin so I have just decided if that's my problem to replace the engine but I'm having a hard time finding 4.6 explorer engine in full around here. So my question is........

Can I replaced my 4.6l with a 4.6 out of a mustang or a truck or anything as long as it is a 4.6?? Please respond as quick as possible

I believe a Mustang 4.6 will be okay, just not one out of an F150. You need a 6 bolt crank, not an 8 bolt.

The block will be iron though, just use your bolt on's. Mustang guys are usually looking for an Explorer engine to reduce weight.

You might post in a Mustang forum, see if anyone using an Explorer engine had to mod anything, like mounts.

Sounds good buddy thanks for the info!! So your saying the mustang I can pull out and drop it straight in my car? Or you saying I need to change my heads out when I swap it?

If you get a 2002 (late 2001) to 2004 Mustang engine, you should be okay. 2005-2009 is a three valve, not a 2 valve.

Here's one thread to start with:

You may need to read down a bit before it becomes informative.

Thunderbird and Crown Vic are other option. When you go back in years you get the non PI (performance improved) heads. Which, you may not care about.

And also buddy will a 4.6 out of a 97 Ford Thunderbird work? I found one for a steal

Ahhh gotch ok I'll check it out

Motor mount bolts and timing cover are the big differences between iron and aluminum blocks. I have seen plenty of rod bearings go bad in these because of oil starvation. Throw a crank kit with new bearings in it and keep it moving if it still runs.

Expect to pay $800+ for a used 02-05 explorer motor

The Explorer is the only vehicle with the 4.6 aluminum block w/2v heads. Every other 4.6 in the F150, E150, Crown vic, Town car, Grand marq, Mustang ect has an iron block. Its a doable swap to put an iron block engine in place of the aluminum but its not "bolt in".
