Well for about 3 months now my explorer when shifting into any gear at any speed basically slams into gear, sometimes are worse then others but it is usually rather hard. One U Joint about a year ago went bad and was replaced. I have 129,000 miles on it. When in gear it does not miss or slip, still has very solid acceleration just not when shifting. About once every 2-3 months when I put it into Drive I have to give it a lot of gas to get it to actually move and then it is fine. No fluid has ever been visible on the ground. Tranny Fluid is good. Had Tranny Flushed about 1 1/2 months ago and didn’t make much of a difference with the shifting Problem. Please Help, Hope It’s a Cheap Solution :fire:

WOW! HArd Shifting!

:fire: Someone PLEASE PLEASE Help!,,,, I have a 96 explorer xlt v6 with 137000 miles on it. When it shifts into all gears it basically slams into gear. it almost feels like someone rear ends my car when it shifts. besides the extremly hard shifting the transmission seems very solid no slips. There are no codes present i have a code reader. When traveling above 70 mph for more then about 10 min i notice my temp gauge go up just a little then i get off the interstate and my o/d light starts blinking and transmission oil rolls out of the area around where the driveshift connects. SomeOne Please Help!!!! :fire:

First off, most code readers will not read the 1000 series of codes, sometimes called proprietary codes. Your HARSH shift are likely a computer commanded thing called failure management effects mode (FMEM). An overheated trannie can trip this.... and also cause your leaking... I suspect something is causing you to overheat.

The first thing you may need to do is find a place that can read even properietary codes... the FORD dealer can, other places may too. The flashing OD is a code and it is in memory. Clearly it must be a proprietary code - lets find out what it is first.

I am going to move this to the transmissions forum where you will get better response.

Thanks Glacier.... I may have disconnected my battery since the last time the o/d light came on would that effect the memory?,,, should i go down the interstate again and get it to do it so i can find out?,,, Appriciate it...

Yeah, disconnecting the battery will destroy keep alive memory. Might want to try and see if the code reappears, and then get it read....

Ditto!

What I found. I have a 2000 Ranger. Transmission would "slam" from 1st to 2nd. Check engine light came on. Had codes read and it said EGR problem. I replaced the EGR valve and slam was somewhat better but still no good yet plus the check engine light came on again. Same code. I happened to check the radiator coolant a few days later. I was horrified to see it was WAY low. I filled it up with anti-freeze and ... the check engine light went out and stayed out ... and the slam went away. Shifts like "butter". It's been two weeks. Keeping fingers crossed! Hope this helps??

i had hard shifting on mine was because of low coolant from blown gaskets =[ stopped with my 700 junkyard motor with 65k on it =] now runs like a champ

Thanks for the comment ...

I realize that with that much coolant missing I better be finding out where it's going. No leaks I can see soooo ... hope it's not a head gasket! Not sure I'm good enough with a wrench to replace that.

well its actually quiet easy i did full head job on my own and then full engine job with one person helping because i got full engine cheaper than i payed for the heads haha hence why im selling the heads i bought butn yea head gaskets suck to replace but are expensive in a shop

hard shifting too

my 97 ranger had a hard shift for sometime. I kept on regular fluid and trans filter changes, but it still shifted kinda hard and would hang in gear sometimes. long story short, after sitting for a couple months, i noticed that my trans fluid had a red rust look to it. Ive been told that coolant was gettin into my trans, via the lines that run through the radiator...hmmmm. and now my trans basically does not work

i hava 97 ranger, 4.0 automatic. what tranny does my truck have>>??4r44..5r55...a4ld??ive gotten diff answers. and will a tranny from a 96 explorer fit in my truck>>>>????
HELP
