Hi Dave, welcome to the site.

I know literally nothing about the SOHC. All I can offer is a bump.

Howzit Dave! I moved your thread to the proper forum, and retitled it to help you get some help.

hey dave, ive experienced this problem in other vehicles ive owned but not in my trac (knock on wood once again!), but i might be able to point you in vaguely the right direction. did you check to see if you have some sort of oil leak? if you are leaking oil, this can cause low oil pressure and that can cause the timeing chain to rattle. if not and your oil level is good, do you hear the rattle most in the morning when the engine is cold? and if so, does it seem to get quieter as you drive, warm the engine and build oil pressure? is the speed of the rattle consistent with the amount of gas you put to the pedal? how does the oil look? does it look foamy? get back to this thread with some answers to these questions and you might get some good answers. my guess is from the sound of you losing coolant and overheating, coupled with a loss in oil pressure, this sounds like a blown head gasket. if your oil is foamy or doesnt look as think as it should, this might be your culprit. try doing a search on this forum on "timing chain rattle" "death rattle" or "blown head gaskets". good luck and let us know what you find.

my timing chain rattle and oil preassure drop happened shortly after i took my thermostat out cause my truk wouldnt stop overheating, thinking it was the problem i still had coolant loss and shortly after my timing chain started to rattle at low rpms..my oil seems to look normal definately needs to be changed its far overdue..dis morning i started it up and it sounded ok...just dont wana drive it and take a chance at making it worst...wat should i do now

so no foamy looking oil? thats a good sign, that means that your coolant is most likely not being leaked and lost into your engine which may eliminate the blown head gasket. does the rattle sound seem consistant in terms of its speed and rythym with how much gas you give it, and does it seem loudest in the morning and get quieter as the day goes by? do you notice any coolant leaking to the ground? put a large piece of cardboard under the truck and wait to see where it leaks. this can help you trace where you are losing your coolant.
