Hey guys, I went to install my new headunit yesterday and everything went alright for the most part, got the wiring correct and everything seems to be working properly. My factory 8'' sub wasn't working before the install, and when I was installing the new headunit I noticed some wiring had been messed with from the previous owner on the harness for the sub so I fixed that, and blew the sub within about 15 minutes of it working, hahaha. Oh well, my 12'' will be going in shortly anyways.

On to my question;

I ordered everything from Crutchfield, and the dash mounting kit they sent me was an American International kit, and I can't seem to figure out how it mounts in the dash, there is a mounting bracket that screws to the back of the headunit and slides onto the "track" in the dash. Is this how everyone else mounts theirs? Maybe if someone has old pictures lying around from their install so I can see exactly how it mounts or something that would be awesome.

As of right now, it's just sitting inside the dash not secured by anything, so if I accelerate too fast it slides out haha, I'd definitely like to get it secured. Also, are there any tricks to tucking the wiring harnesses out of the way behind the headunit? There are so many wires back there that it's all bunched up and it pushes against the back of the headunit...

Thanks guys, sorry if these questions seem stupid, I did try to search without much luck.

It's a 1999 explorer 4 door

That's the kit I have, I think the bracket I'm supposed to use is the triangle shaped one in the bottom right of the picture.

Duct Tape.

The triangle attached to the back of the radio as a support on the track.
There should be 2 pieces that go on either side of the radio, this will allow it to 'click' into place on the side. That's how most kits work.

Also you might double check the sleeve that the after market unit slides into.
Mine had tabs that bent out and locked into the mounting unit.

Lol, duct tape is a viable option at this point. I guess I just don't fully understand how it "clips" in the dash, I know what two side pieces you're talking about, they attach to the sides of the mounting kit, but what do they "clip" into in the dash so it stays in place? I'm sorry for the stupid questions honestly, I'll try mounting it again this weekend when I have time and I install my sub and amp, I'll have it back out anyways!

As for the sleeve, the radio is in the sleeve correctly I just don't know how the actual kit mounts to the car, haha.

I like doing car audio stuff but obviously I'm a newbie :( I just don't like paying for stuff that I can do myself, it just takes me a bit longer to get it right

If you were closer, I'd put it in for you. :D

but, it sounds like you're not adjusting the tabs on the sleeve part right. Like someone above said, sometimes you have to bend out certain tabs to get it to fit.

That kit does work in Explorers.. Take the radio out and try to put in just the kit. I had trouble getting my double din mount in because you have to push in while pushing the tabs towards the radio to get it in.

The harder it is to get in, the harder it is to get out/steal.

This is your kit:

OP remove the sleeve from the radio and slide it in the bracket (see above)
bend the tabs on the sleeve out on the sides to lock it in. Then after you connect the wire bundles the radio will slide right in and click into place.
If the head unit doesn't have a bolt on the rear of it don't worry about that triangle piece.

Thanks again for the replies guys I really do appreciate the help! I think I have the radio in the metal sleeve just fine, I'll try to clarify my question with this edited picture from Dom lol.

I am just trying to figure out how the actual kit mounts to the dash of the car, not how the radio clips into the kit if that makes sense, does it just sit in there? I know some cars it seems to screw in or something, this one has no mounting screws or anything though?

What's to prevent the whole unit (dash kit+radio) from just sliding out of the dash hole?

How does the kit "clip" into the vehicle itself? Is it just the triangle piece that slides onto the track, or do the side pieces that come with the kit (I did not attach these btw) clip into the sides of our dash somehow

ugh sorry for the small picture, I added arrows if it's hard to see, just to clarify that I'm wondering how THAT itself mounts in the dash:mad:

The kit itself clips in also, just take your time and work it around the edges you will hear it click into place.
