Okay... Im not sure if this is a problem or not.. but when I got my headers first installed... I could lay down some nice rubber... not just a chirp.. but a good 15-20ft. Now... I cant do it. I dont know whats up. I thought maybe it was computer related... so I pulled to battery and put it back.. still no rubber. Hmmm... What could it be? Im lost.

Usually with stuff like this, Nick, it's something that you are just forgetting. Think carefully of what you did when you first messed around with it and burnt some rubber. Perhaps it's because you burnt rubber so many times that the treads are worn down(though I doubt that you would have purposely peeled your tires out that much). Maybe it's just because your car is havinga bad day or something. Often times when you have exhausted the most complex solutions, the simplest solution tends to be the answer. Hope this helps a little. Maybe it's your chip adjusting to the new better flowing exhaust? I don't know...Keep asking....

Not even that, Nick our stock tranny is not made to be raced or constantly abused with attempts to burn rubber. You could have exhausted your tranny a bit. Be careful, b/c if you continue to floor the truck, that tranny's life is going to go down the tube.

Flyguy, look at my recent post under your header thread. After my leaks were fixed, the truck moves much better.

maybe the leaks are just worse off. Ill have to take it back when I get the chance... as far as wearing out the tranny...I was only burning rubber for a day... about 3-4 times total... hmmm

IMHO...

I believe the computer is too smart for it's own good. Mine has "learned" the old way several times and I've had to kill the power to it. I noticed that one of the times I left it disconnected for about 5 minutes and it didn't seem to change but the next time it was over night and that seemed to help. It's very aggravating to have it lose the sensivity to mods but what can ya do?

I've been suspecting that the same thing is happening to my '97. After about a week or two, my power doesn't seem as good as it is right after disconnecting the battery. I'll find out next month when I take my Explorer to the track. I'll make a few runs and then disconnect the battery and finish the night out and compare the differences.

Hmm... when you disconnect your batter... doesnt it make your fuel real rich? Maybe thats all it is... is you getting more fuel. I think the only way to really keep that is to get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator... but im just making all this up. :)

nick

Nick, I'm pretty sure it does run rich after reconnecting the battery. One thing I've noticed is that if I don't punch it for a while she seems to loose the umph! But if I floor it a couple times it comes right back! I read an article a few years ago about Ford ECU's...said it learns driver habits..

I also notice my power fade over time, but kicking in the spurs and few times does bring the power back. The computer just tries to get the best mileage, and running the truck a little slower (leaner) does that. The ECU does learn driver habits. I find that sometimes my shift points change depending on if I'm in the city or on the highway for a while. Or maybe I'm just imagining things. Probably the latter........Dead Link Removed

I'm gonna have to agree with everyone who thinks their ECU has "good and bad days." sometimes, it seems like I have endless power at my disposal, and the next day or later that week she's gutless. the weather just got pretty cold around here over the last two weeks or so... one would expect an immediate horsepower gain from the more dense air, right? wrong. dogged it for about a week and then, magically, I'm reminding myself of where the firewall is one day this week and she's just oozing power all of a sudden. It's not just that she has more juice off the line, either. it's more like I have this wandering rev limiter based on how the truck's feeling that day. let's face it, our trucks have minds of their own. respect their authori-ty. :)

Still no return of the rubber burning... It seems to be running pretty well.. just none of that exciting noise. Maybe my tires are a little low... hmmm

nick

seriously Nick... mike's right. I only brake-torqued my truck three or four times and I swear, it's never been the same. doesn't help that it's a 173k-old trans, but leaving a few patches on the pavement certainly didn't help the cause. you should swap the old AL4D for a BW T5 out of a mustang if you want to do that all the time :)

Aaron

I believe that the power fading is due to the gas and the cumputer is adjusting to lower octane or bad gas. I noticed this shortly a day or so after gasing up. I use 93 octane.

I changed the FPR and now getting almost 18 mpg street/highway driving. I used to get 12 mpg until I changed the FPR.

Unless you have a new puter chip.. use the cheap stuff... its not "bad" gas.. just lower octane gas. :) The computer is calibrated to use the cheap stuff.. check in your manual. however.. it you have an aftermarket puter... then go ahead. Hmm... well.. I was thinking about the tranny... I guess that could be some of it. What is involved in servicing the tranny? what is replaced? Are there aftermarket parts to strengthen it up?

nick

Nick, have you taken a look at your O2 sensor since you lost power? You may want to pull it out and see if it is fouled with carbon or something. Your new headers may have come coated with oil to protect the metal. If the oil burned off, you may have fouled up the sensor. It's worth a look.

I have a SuperChip install for few months now. I am sure it may be the type of gas.

Jeez, I hope not. they are brand new. I guess I can pull one... or better yet... check my milage when I go on a trip. That should tell me pretty quick if they are bad.

nick

Yeah, checking mileage is a good idea too. That'll give you an idea on how its running. You ought to double check as much stuff as you can. Does it bog just at low RPM? How's the high end, around 4000 RPM? Is it strong up there?

It's kind of weird that it ran so strong for a few days then just lost power. As others have suggested, disconnecting the battery for a longer period of time may help. Lots of other things it could be. Double check all those vacuum hoses, the wires to the O2 sensors, stuff like that. One of them may have melted against a header pipe or something like that.

I think if the tranny was going, you'd notice some slip, especially when it changed gears. That isn't always the case, but it is the most likely symptom.

You haven't gotten the new chip in yet, have you? Like others have said, your computer may have been fooled, in which case a chip will definately help. You may need a custom burn, though.

And finally, when you fill up next time, use premium fuel to see how that works. It may take a few drives to get any results, but its worth a try.

The new chip is in, I use premium, using the synthetic oils, ya know.. the works. I aired up my tires up the other day.. they were like 5 pounds low. No biggie.. Oh..I was thinking this could be a reason. I have a loud clunking noise in the front suspension. Like when I go up driveways and speedbumps. It alls seems to bounce alot. Could this be where Im losing my off the line power? Im taking it in a week from now... then I shall be fixed.. see how it goes.. getting the poly bushings put in too.
