I need a big favor, could someone PLEASE measure a 2wd 4R70W from bellhousing to tip of tailshaft housing. I need to determine if I am going to need a different driveshaft or if I can just swap yokes onto my existing driveshaft.
Also, are the 4.0 and 5.0 auto shifter cables the same? My local yard only has 4.0's but I need the auto steering column and shifter cable.
Thanks,
Jesse

I am fairly certain that the shifter cables are different between 4.0 and 5.0. I changed the shift cable when I swapped the 5.0 into my sport.

I can't help you on the trans as I have the AWD 4r70w.

You can use the column from any 95-01, but the cable you might get from Ford or here(Karl - Kubiak)(he sells parts here).

I also don't have a 2WD, make it a truck because I think the cars can be a different length. You can use a 4WD trans if that turns up better or cheaper, you'd have to have the 2WD output shaft and tail housing.

Do you have a speed sensor on your transmission? If you do then you have to get the 4R70W old enough to get one with the sensor in the output shaft and tail housing. That went away in 1998 in all Explorers, it's on the rearend now.

No VSS and the tailshaft idea requires taking it to a trans shop and having the entire trans taken apart because the tailshaft is one of the first things to go in. Thanks on the info for the column, I'll hit up the local yard. I might just check part numbers with Ford to see how the 4.0 and 5.0 cables compare.

I have looked on ebay for tail shafts and housings but it seems that so many lengths are available. I wouldn't mind taking my trans apart as a project to swap the shaft, but I was unsure of which length to purchase. If you find out the correct parts, be sure to post them here.

It's good that you don't need the trans VSS, much better choices with the 98+ parts.

Check with online Ford parts sites, sometimes the new part isn't too bad. I like Tasca Ford for best prices, and they answer the phone, usually.
