Help! O/D Light keeps flashing

The O/D light in the insrument panel keeps flashing and when I drive it stays in the gears really long before it switches to the next gear. I have a 1995 Exlporer Limited (auto). I tried pressing the O/D button on the end of the shifter but it won't go away. Sorry if this is not the right place to post.

Welcome to the site.. It can be a number of causes, the best thing to do is to take it somewhere where they have the ability to read transmission codes. When you turn off the truck and re-start it, does it re-appear or go away?

I'm kinda of a poor college student so I was trying to avoid taking it to the shop where they will probably charge me an arm and an leg. I was hoping someone here had the same problem already and know what I need to fix. To answer your question though.... when I turn the engine off and back on again the light will come on immediately. I'm thinking there's something wrong with the button?

Go get your codes read at a local tranny shop....they'll give you the number and that will help us figure out what's going on.
