I have a 96 Explorer, 4wl drive, with about 124,000 miles.
It sounded extra clunky (in a bad way - seemed to be coming
from under the truck- in front) driving home, through town last night.
This am, it shifted into reverse fine, but wouldn't back out/drive out
in reverse. It felt as if the brakes were on. They weren't.
It moved a few inches, if at all. I checked all the fluids levels.
They're fine. I've had the regular maintenance done on it
for the past 3 1/2 yrs I've had it - including a transmission fluid flush.
We tried to put it into neutral
then push it backwards, so I could, hopefully, drive it to a transmission
shop, not needing to use the reverse gear. It shifted into neutral fine, but it wouldn't allow us to push it backwards either - it felt locked -
the same as for reverse. It does drive forward,
at least for about 8 inches (all the room in the garage). So, it's in my garage
and I can't back it out. I'm planning on calling the transmission
place in the am, and a tow company, I guess. I'd appreciate any input,
please....soon.
