Yesterday my "O/D" light started blinking on and off. I checked the manual, and it said that this could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. the vehicle is running fine, and the tranny sounds normal. before I spend a bunch of money to have a mechanic check it out, I thought I'd see if anyone else has had this happen. BTW, I have a '97 XLT, SOHC V-6, 4x4. thanks!

I drive a 94 F 150 as a company truck my o/d light was blinking and also the electronic odometer was gone ,Ichanged the fuse and alls good . I hope that helps

My 95 XL just started to do the same thing although I noticed a slight change in how the tranny shifts into O/D and the speed it shifts from reverse to drive is now much quicker. My first test is to disconnect the battery overnight to reset the computer and I will see if the problem reoccurs. You know, these computers can be fooled sometimes into reading a fault from a weird set of circumstances while driving. I am hoping the reset will either show it as a true fault or as a false alarm.
I'll post later when I have an answer.

same thing happened to me >>

[then i lost the 2-3 shift a week later . just had the trans rebuilt on warranty and it shifts better than when new . also it does not hunt around when going up inclines on the highway . they must have made some improvements because it shifts alot better than ever. they also had to replace the motor that shifts the transfer case , go figure , i used it about ten times in 3 years they said the electronics in that made the o.d light flash on and off ,

I have had same deal. My tranny sometimes would go into neutral while acceling, but would then go into gear if you let off the gas..this was very intermittant. Then one day the OD light started flashing, I reset the computer and the light did not return for about 1,500 miles. Now on Xmas eve the light returned. The tranny seems to shift rougher, but it does go from drive to reverse a lot quicker then before, which I like, but when coming to a stop the tranny downshifts a bit rougher then before. It is going in on thursday. I will let you guys know results.

so far so good

I will have to see how this does in the long term but so far the light is off and the shifting is back to "normal".
Someone somewhere posted once that the speed sensors could be tricked into a fault under certain conditions. Being that it is winter and lately it has been very slippery with lots of glare ice it could be possible that in 4Hi or 4Auto as it is on my dash that the sensors could see an error of speed readings from the four wheels and this would cause the computer to register a fault and go into a "safe mode" like your computer at home is able to do. It will only load a minimum of drivers, just enough to keep you going. Reboot the system and quite often the error is corrected and you are back to normal operating. Or at least thats how the theory goes. I'll let you know how it goes.
