- 2002 Explorer XLT 4WD
I have a 2002 Explorer 4.0 with 4WD (Auto/4 High/4 Low). I believe it has the borg warner 44-11 transfer case though I haven't looked at the tag to verify. I'm having trouble getting the 4WD to work so I'm trying to track down as much info as possible. I don't want to just assume it's the control module and burn that $$.
One thing I'm trying to understand is how 4wd is physically actuated when the computer (or my 4 High button) calls for it. Does the clutch pack simply get locked out via electronic signal? Or is there a mechanical actuation by the 4x4 shift motor? Or does the shift motor actuate only to shift the case into 4 Low?
