Hey, I have an 8.8 rear with 4.10 gears and trac loc that I will be putting under my Jeep soon.

I was wondering if the trac loc carrier has to be replaced with an open carrier when I add a lockrite locker in it. (might go with an aussie also)

if so, do the gears have to be reset?

For the (regular) Lockrite locker or the Aussie, yes you have to have an open carrier to install one of those. If you get the Powertrax "No-Slip" it is made to be used in the trac loc carrier.

You won't have to reset your gears unless you put an open carrier in it to accept the regular Lockrite or Aussie.

A little clarification: The No-Slip unit is available for open and trac-loc carriers. The Lock-Rite is available for open carrier only.

If you decide to swap carriers, you should have the the backlash checked to be sure the alignment of the ring gear and pinion gear are correct. Otherwise, you risk making a big mess of the whole assembly.

Based on some of the feedback I've read about the Lock-Rite, you might want to spend the extra $$ for the No-Slip for your trac-loc carrier.

My $0.02 - Dave.

I've had a lockright for over 2 years now in my truck and have had no problems. It was my DD until about 4 months ago. The lockright is a bit noisy at times, it clunks, it bangs, but other than that it was served me real well and I didn't have a problem driving it on the street everyday.

Unless you are good at setting up rear ends, I would go with the powertrax noslip. For the extra$$ it will be less hassle for you. Just take out the guts of the trac loc and put in the Noslip. If you go with the carrier swap and lockrite or Aussie you may ahve to reset the pinion depth, which means a new crush sleeve and pressing off the bearing to change shims. Not every carrier is exactly the same. All it takes is a couple thousandths out and the gears could be noisey or worse, the gears wear out quick. The 8.8 can be tedious to set up. I am just warning you of the possibilities and hassles of a carrier swap, yet it may just change over and everything is perfect. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Well, the No Slip is $440, and a full case detroit is $470, so it makes sense just to spend the $ on setup to do the full detroit.

Or, spend a ltitle more and do an Eaton E-Locker.

Anybody have any experience with the No Slip, Detroit, Or Eaton, please feel free to respond.

Thanks

Eaton being installed now....talk to me after the Attica trip in 2 weeks....

Detriot TrueTrac = kicks ass.

You need to shop around some. I've seen No Slips advertised for $365.00.

Where do yall shop online for lockers? I want a place that has good info and good prices, but i havent really found anything that stands out so far. Cause im looking for a locker for my 91 also.

I like the aussie if you have an open carrier. Here is their site http://www.offroadlockers.com/home.php//////AUSSIE/.html

Alright awesome, thanks for the link. So would you recomend it with a daily driver? Ive heard good stuff about their products, but cant remember anything about how they held up when driven on daily. Thanks for the help!

I know of 3 guys that are running them in front and rear applications. They have had no problems at all and are very easy to set up. I am in the middle of putting an 8.8 with 4.56 gears in my BII and I will be putting in an Aussie. For the price, you can't lose. Just my $.02

do a full locker.... if you replace the carrier you replace the main weakpoint of the 8.8 axle with a nearly indestructable locker.
