I need some help figuring out a problem with my 97 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV.
The check engine light came on last weekend so I bought a AutoXray Ez Scan 4000. ( Tired of going to the dealer for 150.00 a pop to scan.) Plus I would like to learn more about my vehicle. I did an initial scan and recieved the code :PO442 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected -(small leak ).
I figured this is no big deal and continued to drive it over the weekend. Well Wednesday morning it won't start - cranks over - but no firing at all.
I come home after work and check for burnt fuses, and wiggle a few wires, I can hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when I turn on the key, hook up the new scanner and check for codes - accidentaly clear the codes... ( Dumbass ) and so now I'm sitting there going Ahhh S*** !!!!!
I had tried putting it in and out of park to see if the neutral safety switch was sticking or something ( Does it have one ? ) and that didn't work.... so for whatever reason I put it in neutral, roll the Ex back about six inches and put it back in park... try to start it and it fires right up. Still don't know why.
So anyways, I scan it, no codes coming up, but now I notice that when I go into monitor mode on the scanner it is showing a bunch of wierd stuff . ( I scanned it going down the highway coming to work this morning)
Fuel system loop closed ( Normal I think )
Load value 47.8 %, Coolant temp 185 , Short term fuel trim 1 : -100%
Long term fuel trim 1 :-100%, Short term fuel trim 2 : -100%, Long term fuel trim 2: -100% , Engine RPM 1908, Vehicle speed 0MPH, Ign timing 22.0 Degrees, Intake air temp 44Deg, Air flow rate 3.53 lb/min, Throttle position :31%, Ox Sensor 1, Bank 1 :0.00 V, Ox sensor 2, Bank1: 0.00 V,
Ox sensor 1, Bank 2 - 0.00 V,

Am I doing something wrong with the scanner? It semed like the first time I hooked it up I saw normal value for the Trims and O2 sensors. Now , no matter what I try with the scanner , I get the same funky numbers.

If I then go into the creen caled " Test results " I get a bunch of results that say Pass Low or Pass High, but there are some that failed:
Test ID $10 Fail
Component ID $21
Fail High
FFFF not <= 0033
Rear to front catalyst monitor switch ratio bank 2.

Test ID $22 Fail
Component ID $00
Fail High
057 not <= 0480
Leak check down Vacuum Bleedup

TEST id $25 Fail
Component ID $00
Fail low
00A1 not >= 0400
Vapor generation maximum delta pressure rise.

Test ID $41 Fail
Component ID $11
Fail Low
001B not >= F900
Delta pressur for upstream DPFE Hose test

Test ID $52 Fail
Component ID $00
Fail High
FFFF not <= 0000
Cylinder Events tested.

Sorry for being so long winded... does any of this make sense or is my onboard computer going AWOL? Looks like I need an Eqyptian hyroglphics translator.... Any help from the Scanner experts would be appreciated.
Thanks, :roll: Fat Cougar.

Something sure sounds goofed up. With true readings of fuel trim and no volts for O2 sensors, I'd not expect the engine to run. Something is goofy. Try the scanner on another OBD-II vehicle and see if it works (e.g. rule out your scanner being the problem).

Good idea, I tried it on one of our company trucks and the scanner read everything correctly, Volts on the sensors and Fuel trim readings.
I'm starting to think maybe the Computer has gone wild ( Not like the girls unfortunately ) . Wthout getting proper readings to my scanner, I resigned myself to drop it off at the staelership for an appointment tomorrow.... I hate admitting defeat... I will let you know what they find.
Thanks for the help. much appreciated. :chug:
