2001 Ford Sport Trac
Hello all !
I recently purchased a 2001 sport trac 2 wheel drive. I love it !

The on/off buttons on the steering wheel for the cruise control were missing, so I replaced them and the harness also. The light on the buttons are on now as opposed to before the buttons on the right did not, but the cruise control still does not work!
Any suggestions? I used to be a B tech for Ford 10 years ago, I do have a power probe and some tools to diagnose, Im just not sure were to start since I dont have any elec diagrams or ford diag manuals at my disposal.
Thanks for your help in advance.

there is a recall on my sport trac " SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION"
Is that the "Cruise Control Release Switch replacement ?"
I am just going to pick one up at Advance auto parts for $27.99 and see if that fixes the problem. I hate waiting at dealerships, takes them 2 hours to do anything..Ill let you know how it turns out.
Thanks !!!

check to see if the recall was ever done to your vehicle. it adds a jumper wire and some fuses up near the master cylinder (big ugly mess of wire, fuses and wire ties). if not, Ford will still do it for free. also check to make sure all the associated fuses are good. some owners just disconnected the cruise related wires instead of getting the recall done.

I replaced the cruise control release switch and it DID NOT Fix the cruise control.
I did notice that the Cruise control light on the dash goes on for less than a second when pressing the on button on steering wheel then goes off.
Any ideas? Thanks

I checked online and the reccall has NOT been done on my S-Trac. I thought all they did was replace the cruise control cut off switch . I guess there is more to it from what you are saying.
Thanks for the info, will take it into the dealer and let you guys know if that was the fix.
Thanks Dan

there's not more to it. it's just a jumper wire with 2 fuses in it. it has no effect on the function of the cruise control. just prevents your truck from catching fire.

Hi rockyblue;

I went through the same problems with my cruise. My post here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363928
explains the problem and what eventually fixed it.

I had the same "quick flash" of the dash cruise light problem and the post above has an explanation of how to perform a test built into the cruise control that helps pinpoint the cause.

Hope this helps.

FYI, I took my 2001 sport trac to the Ford dealer for recall "SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION"
and now the cruise control WORKS!!! :O)

Thanks !!!
