I have a 98 XLT with 16" wheels SOHC. I just bought a camper that has a hitch weight of around 500lbs (maximum recommended for the explorer). The back of the truck rides lower than I like and I am wondering if I can have some kind of heavy duty springs or shocks put in the back. I am not neccessilly interested in lifting the truck just giving it a stronger back end to tow the camper. I don't wish to jeopordize the ride as its my wifes vehicle. I also dont want to spend more than a few hundred dollars. Can anyone suggest anything to me?

Airlift and Firestone along with Monroe & Rancho all make systems that will fit your ride. J C Whitney, Pep Boys and major catalog outfits also stock these at right around what you wanted to spend. The fancy ones have onboard compressors and the lesser inflatable polyurethane ballons. BTW, are you using a weight-distributing hitch? It increases your towing capacity.

I have a pop-up camper which cannot be used with a weight distributing hitch. Thanks for the info, I have a new firestone center near my house, I will inquire about the systems you discribed.
