'95 4-Door
I checked through all the old posts and wasn't able to get clear information on my explorer, so i'm posting to get some clarification and possibily some help.

I have a 1995 Explorer, 4-door with the AUTOSET button. I know i don't have a sub in the cargo area, but i'm not sure if it's JBL, doesn't say it anywhere. I also have the rear control, no phone option. This is the model that switched over to the 1.5din. I'm assuming this is the premium system. Has, AM/FM/Cass. Now my question is:

1. Do i have a seperate AMP that I have to bypass when replacing the HU?

2. By purchasing a HU, wire harness(from crutchfield or somewhere else) and HU mount is that all required for replacement or additional wiring and bypassing needed?

I was confused by other posts saying there are seperate/external amps driving the rear speakers and so forth.

IF someone could clear my confusion up, i'll order the unit today and get on it this coming week.

Planning on purchasing a AIWA CDC-MP32.

Thanks in advance

Before you order the head unit, keep in mind that you can install a Double Din head unit in your truck. I have one in mine. It requires a little bit of trimming on the piece that surrounds the radio but it looks great!

The pic is a little blurry and dark, but you should be able to see what it would look like!

That looks awesome, what kind of HU is that?
Model/Brand?

Also, how hard was it to get in there? I thought the 95's HU was a 1.5dim and not a double.

Does it play mp3's?

thanks

The HU is a Pioneer DEH-4400! (or something like that) It is actually quite easy to install. The only real modification you have to do is trim the inside top and bottom edge of the radio opening on the plastic trim piece of the dash opening. There are atleast 2 kits available for this. One is from Metra and the other I can't remember right now. If you have ever installed a HU in a car you should be able to do this install yourself! I also painted the trim ring from the Metra kit to match the silver of my interior. Since your interior trim is black you won't have to worry about that!

You do have an amp in the cargo area that you need to bypass. It is behind the pass-side interior panel just forward of the cargo net pocket thingy. The bypass harness from Crutchfield is good. You have to run wires from the HU location back to the amp location to bypass the stock wiring. The Crutchfield 1.5 din > 1 din mounting kit is ok, but the Walmart kit is better.

So if you get it from crutchfield, they give you all you need, but you might not be satisfied with their mounting kit. The Walmart kit is better than both the crutchfield and circuit city kits by far, but I forget the brand. It comes in a rigid clear plastic package unlike the others that come in plastic bag-like packaging. Also, the circuit city amp bypass kit for the X's is overkill cause it has some sort of circuitry module thingy. All you need is a good bypass wiring harness made for the Explorer with long enough leads to make it all the way to the rear of the truck.

Good luck!

The brand I think is Scosche.
You can check out their wiring harnesses and kits at scosche.com
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the information. ORder for the headunit and harness/bypass went out on friday.

Now reading more of the forum, i now want to bump up the quality of sound in the explorer. Some questions came up, hopefully some of you guys will have an educated opinion.

The AIWA will put out 24x4 RMS to the speakers. By putting in a 40x4RMS aftermarket amp what will happend?

1. Will the quality of sound make a HUGE difference compared to the HU power and new speakers?

2. WIll i need to rewire to the speakers? 12 gauge heavy enough for the 24x4 or 40x4?

3. Can i just replace the factory amp with the aftermarket and NOT rewire to the car battery? Instead use the factory ground and fuse if they exist? ONLY wire to the HU? Is this possible or does it take more voltage than the factory amp?

thanks in advance
