My wife's ex just died. Apparently, the truck lost the ability to propel itself while she was driving home. She coasted to the side of the road and called me. She did not hear any noise or feel anything adverse prior to this happening(understand, though, my wife is not the most observant driver so I am not sure she would notice anything that did happen). She had complained of poor power recently, so just a few weeks ago I changed the plugs, air and oil filters.

As of now, the engine starts/runs fine and goes into gear(stick) smoothly, but the car will not move an inch in any gear in any setting(2wd/4auto/4lo). I have had to work since then, so I have not had any time to delve deeper. I am hoping to start tomorrow. I am hoping someone here will be able to help me diagnose the issue.

I have not looked to see if the driveline is moving when the car is running/in gear, but since the TC will not shift I am guessing it is not. I will check tomorrow (obviously).

What are the possible causes? TC shift motor failure (TC now stuck in neutral?)/TC failure/Tranny failure (seems like it would make some noise)

Most likely to me seems to be TC shift motor failure as truck seems to be in TC neutral. There isn't even a setting on the switch for neutral, just 2wd/4auto/4lo.

FYI, truck is 1996 4.0 OHV 4wd 5 speed(M5R1 I think) about 130,000 miles, we bought at 92,000 and it has been maintained fairly well since then(I work alot, so maybe not as well as I would like). My wife drives it every day (and she could definately use to improve her shifting habits), so I don't drive it very often, andI am not real familiar with any issues it may have been having other than my wife complaining of poor power.

Any ideas?
