I just changed my plugs and wires on my 96 X ohv and i mixed up the front and back plug wire on the drivers side when i started it up it ran like crap for a sec then had a loud bang like something hitting the oil pan or something. it took me a sec to figure out what had happened i thought i had maybe left a tool in the engine compartment. i shut it off figured it out changed the plug wire on the coil, now it starts rough evens out at about 2000rpm. When i was checking where it would smooth out at the cel started flashing, i shut it off let it sit for about 10 min started it back up after about 10 sec the cel came on full time. I unplugged the battery and that is where i sit now. I know i'm a moron for mixing up the firing order i hope i didn't toast the engine i just bought the truck last Sunday. :salute:

I finally took a step back put my ego back in the garage and broke out the Haynes guide. I rechecked the firing order and i had the drivers side all kinds of messes up. now she runs smooth as a kitten. well it runs smoother than it did before i changed the plugs and wires.

You are not the only one. I did the same last weekend. But I have not the manual available. Could you tell me the firing order and correct cable connections between coil terminals and each plug?
Thanks

I"ve messed up the firing order on the X a few times.. and I know the one side isn't the same as the other..

Fun when its the simple things, ain't it :)

Don't feel bad. I just installed a thermostat backward and it was leaking fluid like crazy... thought I overheated it and cracked a head during the post-flush start up. Naturally after hours of worrying I realize I should probably check the thermostat housing durrrr
