I have a 1994 Eddie B. Explorer.

It went in for its check up last week and until then it was running perfectly.

Now when I have it back, it is jerking when I accelerate. The Ford dealer says it is the diff. But I dont know.

He is coming to bring the car back in about an hour and I am panicking. He said it will cost me 90,000 yen just for an overhaul of the diff.

Why was it running fine before and now its not.

Do you guys think it is the diff or something different.

Hve been reading some of the posts on is site and I am wondering if the problem is caused by having 2 new tires on the back. Or if it is something to do with the 4WD!

Hi thanks for getting back to me.

I told the mechanic that he should have replaced all four tyres as they all had done 30,000 kilometers and that the front ones are now out of sync with the back. He said that it doesnt matter and that if I put the car into 4 WD it will fix the problem. He said that he put more air in the back tires so that will help the shudder a bit. But I wonder if it is alright to drive in 4WD on normal roads and highways!?

He still says that my diff has problems, but I cant hear anything.. what kind of noise would it make if the diff had a problem?

Hoping you can give me some advice.

It's going to have problems if the tires are different sizes regardless if 4WD is used or not. The front thinks that the rear is turning at a different speed even though the vehicle is traveling at a fixed speed.

Thank you

But, would it be dangerous to drive at high speeds?

Thank you... so there is no danger of having a accident due to mis matched tyres.. or travelling at speed either in 4WD or not, on the highway? Coz the dealer wont have any tyres in for 2 weeks! Dont quiet understand that! I think they are being funny with me coz I said there was nothing wrong with the Diff and argued about the tyres.

Just coz I am a foreign female in Japan.. they try to baffle me with jargon in japanese. Damn I get baffled with jargon in english.... hmm.

I dont know... I have never tried before.

Things are done differently in Japan, unfortunately. I suppose in the States, the same as the UK, you could go to a different garage.

But last time I went to get a brake light bulb replaced at a garage, they said they didnt have stuff for foreign cars and that I would have to get it from the dealer.

I suppose I could go to the like of Autobacs tomorrow and see what they say.

They are the only other place that I could try.

At last!!! 2 new tires on the front.... end of problem!!! Thanks for all the help... and thank you for the welcome.
