'98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC
The boy just totaled out the wifes 98 XLT Explorer 4X4 4-door, and we just bought the egghead a 98 4X2 Sport 2-door (there is a long story behind most of this  ). So here is the rub, the wife likes her 4X4. The wife wants me to find out how much trouble I would be looking at in putting the front differ from the 4 door under the front end of the 2 door. I know that I would need to swap over the transfer case and probably the tranny...even tho they both have the 5R55E and the 4.0 SOHC V6's. Just about everything seems to be the same on the cars, and was just wondering if it would be an easy swap or a total nightmare.

Any help with this would be great, thanks in advance.

Jim B :D .

Don't forget PCM, plus other electronic components.

It would probably be a nightmare depending on how familiar you are with these vehicles. Forget about putting the electronic transfer case into the Sport, pick up a manual BW-1354 -- doing so would make the swap so much easier. After doing so, the only thing you need to worry about is the front axle/drivetrain -- which will probably be all bolt-on.

Oh and you'll probably also need to have the rear driveshaft shortened on the Sport.

You mentioned it's a 4x2 SOHC? Shouldn't be converted to a 4x4, needs the internal balance shaft, the thing will shake itself to pieces, I'm thinking.
