I have checked several post and cannot find one that fits exactly like my issue. My daughters 2000 expl. sport 4.0 sohv has never given a single problem until now. Right after starting, the engine suddenly started to surge (very powerfully) while driving at speeds under 45 mph. Idle is perfect, no surging. Starts perfectly. She stated that a very strong smell of gas was emitting from under the hood, but not visible, when she got to her destination. When she arrived home I drove the vehicle and there was no problems. 10 minutes later we both drove the vehicle and it surged throughout the driving range up to 40 mph (we did not drive beyond that speed). There was no difference in flat vs up or down hill. I checked the FPR and it read a constant 63 psi, vacumm or no, I believe this is correct. Now today when I try and repeat the problem I cannot make it occur. Plugs, wires and fuel filter were replaced within the last few months. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

MAFs seem to give a lot of problems like your having. Try cleaning it or swapping in a known-good one from a donor.
