Hey

i am writeing from small Europe country called Estonia. I own two Ford explorers. One 1998 year one, it runs great. Another one I bought for parts is 4.0l motor and 1997 year one, with broken tranny, but now I would like to repair it.
The problem is that it has only first two gears and no reverse.
I take the tranny to parts to see what is goig on in there. There are two breake kind of things what are adjustable pressure from two bolt outside.
The on what is side of transmission ise broken in two pieces.
Is it enaought for causing only two forward gears and nothing more.
Sorry my bad English but hope you will understand something.

best

Hy

A long time took me to find some time to try rebuilding my tranny.
Before. I had only 2 gears forward and absolutely no reverse.
During the demounting I found intermideate band broken. I ordered and replaced All the three bands, all discs in packs. All 4 balls in VB and solenoid O rings. Also Revers servo O rings. (some kind a improved rings as written on the package). About the front and intermideate servo pistons one had crack on side not very big but big enought for some oil back leakage. I put it into front. (I think I will order both new)

The result.
I was afraid that I will blow something up at the first start, but no.
The car runs forward great, but changing gears up a little too late, adjusted the bands got it better. But max gear is the third one I guess.
What about the reverse. At cold condition not good. It starts go engage at about 2500 rpm. In warmed condition more worse. Sometimes OD light flashing. If it tries to run in reverse at 2500 rpm it is not a smooth(a little jumpi). I think it is some kind of a pressure issue. Does the transmission uses the oil for pressing both servo pistons to back in reverse. What I meant, is the front leaking servo piston a cause for no 4th gear or very bad reverse.

Hy again. Don't charge me because of my stupility, but. What will happen if only one L retainer is in correct place. I put VB all back as photo I had taken when I removed stuff. Only one L retainer is on correct place others are put on the holes where solenoids are seen. What could happen then:rolleyes:
Is it possible cause of all it at the moment. What do the L retainers exactly do? Searched but did not found the answer.
I will try to get some code info also, but after some hours in forums it seems clear mistake visible by eye. It is hard to find some computerman in estonia who can read tranny codes:(

Hey again

I had some time now and I took valve body apart again.
I put the L retainers in the places where they supposed to be.
Result: No 4th gears and bad reverse and again blinking overdrive light.
The most annoying issue is that the oil was not so beatiful as it supposed to be, it is only ran abaout 10 miles.
I will try to get the blinking codes, only way is to drive about 50 miles to diagnostics. Is it a idea?
