I think I bought a MTX Thunder 250D... Ill verify that tomorrow... Is it a good amp? I was looking on cruchfield... and as far as mono amps go... It looked kinda pricy for what your getting... although I dont know anything... I saw a Clarion Pro Audio amp listed... for about $180... the specs seemed superior... especially the THD it had .08% compared to the MTX's .5% Also, the Clarion appeared to give more power... however... it seems to me that there must be a reason the MTX is priced so much higher... or did I just pay for the small size? Suggestions?

The MTX is a class D amp meaning it is very efficent. Also did the amp come with a spec sheet that told you exactly what your amp hits at? I think they all do. MTX rates their amps at like 12.5 volts. Most other companines rate at 14.4 So if they rate an amp to hit at 25x2 it could actually hit at 52x2 at the same 4 ohm load. My friends is that way. The amp says on the box that it's 25x2 but the sheet inside says that the amp actually put out 52x2 when they tested it. Basicly MTX amps are very powerful and very reliable. That's what you paid for. A quality amp.

MTX all the way! There stuff is the best. As mrsteve was saying, MTX WAY underrates their gear. This includes not only power, but THD% too. So much in fact that you have to be careful that its not too powerful for your system. The specs they give you before are BARE minimum. The spec sheet included with the amp will tell you exactly how that individual amp performs. A friend of mine bought the 250D and his spec sheet said 228x1 watts/channel into a 4 ohm load (125x1 rated)and 362x1 watts/channel into a 2 ohm load (250x1 rated). I dont remember what his THD rating was but I know it was way below the minimum spec. You won't be disappointed! Oh, and MTX amps are the toughest amps i have ever used. They are VERY difficult to get to shut off into protection mode. Worth every penny!

Damn... you guys were supposed to tell me it was crap so I would feel better about returning it... maybe I should keep it. Sigh.

I hate to tell ya but all my exprience with MTX is that they kick a$$. I've had em and even had rain leak through a convertable top and it turned right on after I let it dry out....The "D" series amps tend to be used as sub only amps...They are siad to have a slightly higher amount of distortion but I'm not totally sure about this and then again if ya aren't after sound quality, it really doesn't matter....Pete

Well I am after quality.. although I didnt plan on buying all my stuff now... I was hoping for this chrismas to go buy myself a pretty sweet system...

what are you using this amp to power? Personally i don't like mtx but hey man whatever floats your boat. Rockford all the way!

Why don't you like MTX?? I see that you really like Rockford but is that all you like??

I have an MTX Blue Thunder... I think is at least a Legend or Legacy... one of those L words.... Only a 10" though... but I am planning on 2 12" in the future...

I don't think it should really matter between the RFs and the MTX amps TOO much. The whole reason MTX blew up with their original Thunder line of amps in 98 was because the main amp engineer at RF got upset with the company and left for MTX. Which means all the tech went with him. That's when MTX got really sweet, and RF hit that big production lull just making amps each year that looked different colors and cut back on the production of their super high power amps. Always check the fuse ratings on RF amps at Best Buy and the "same" series at normal car audio stores. I heard that the ones at Best Buy had smaller fuses, therefore less output, but haven't checked myself. Just a big arguement on the car audio NGs though.

Nick, you should also consider three tens other than two twelves, like the MTX sub trio available through Crutchfield and stuff. The might be a little shorter so it will fit below the rear cover, and if you do the math, the cone area is a little more. Theoretically, you might get a little more bass if other stuff was similar like cone excursion, etc. I think those trio boxes might fit well in the back. Haven't measure, but if it's a perfect fit, even better.

Hmm... okay..im not to keen on car audio stuff.. still learning.. but not totally ignorant either... but... my 10 box just slides right under my conver now... so I see your point about it being awkward with 12's... anyways... I never quite understood what the advantage of increasing the number of subs was. Does it acually increase the amount the subs appear to "hit"? So would 2 10's outpreform a 1 12 or a 15? I am kinda disapointed in my single 10's performance.. although I havent seen it preform with the new amp... so we shall see... also.. the reason I chose 12's over 15's was becuase the 15's dont seem to have that great of a frequency response... probably because of the larger area it has to controll... although my dad has a 15' on his home theater...jeez.. that thing is scary... we had to weigh it down becuase when we had it really pumpin, it would take off across the room shaking.. heh.

My friend has the MTX enclousure with the 3 10"s. Each sub has an impedeance of of 12ohm and all three are wired in mono. The problem is that there are 3 10 inch subs to power. Each sub is rated at 250watts RMS meaning to get the best performance you are going to need at least 600 watts to power these subs. The enclosure can handle 750watts RMS. My friend has it hooked up to a Sony amp I don't remember the wattage off hand but I know he is underpowering the subs by more than 100 watts. Oh and we took the box out of his car and put it in mine. It fits perfectly. I mean there is about an inch on each side, maybe even less. If you got 2 12"'s I don't know that they would sound as good as the 3 10"'s. I love the MTX Thunder6000's. They pound. Oh and the box is awesome. The back of the box is clear so you can see inside. So you could have the subs facing the seats and then from the back you could see into the box.

You didnt tell me how the 3 subs sound? As far as power goes.. this amp will be it... I was told that it should have no problem handling 2 12" subs... the paper inside said it was rated at 338watts. So whatcha think I should do? I think I want to at least get 2 subs... hmm

The three 10's sound amazing. I don't think 338watts RMS is enough to power them though. Maybe if you got an enclousure with 2 MTX Thunder6000's. If that's the only amp you are getting then I would go with 2 10"'s, each with an 8ohm impedeance and wire them in mono. 338watts is plenty to get lots of thump from 2 10"'s

I have friends that have MTX stuff. But i mean i have no problems with mtx. I just like Rockford a lot better. I don't have all RF in my explorer though. I do have a alpine head unit. Thats because rockford makes crappy head units though or i would have one of those too.

Well... I just got back from CC, and after getting one of those power tester things, it was not getting enough power from the battery... tightened it up some... and it was good to go... of course now this means I had to make the hard decision of whether or not to keep the new amp... I plugged it in and tried it out... and it is sweet. :) But...its also expensive and doesnt have the upgrade potential I would like... after asking around some, and also from here...it appears this amp is not going to have the power I need for my next upgrade... so back it goes. Sigh.

Nate does like other stuff, then Rockford and Alpine. He also likes his hand :P
