...new guy here. I just bought a 2000 XLT and I like it so far. There are a few things I'm going to do as the new owner like change the oil and tranny fluid, etc., but there a also a couple things I'd like to fix that aren't just maintenance related.

1. Driver's side door lock - All of the door locks work with either the fob or the lock switch except for the driver's door. It moves when you hit either the fob or switch, but doesn't engage. I have to lock/unlock it manually. Maybe just a linkage getting hung up or that is disconnected?

2. Side mirror switch - fuse is good, so I guess either the switch or a broken wire. Does it just pop into place or will I have to dig under the dash to get it out?

3. The gas gauge and temperature gauge don't "zero out" when the key is turned off. They work fine, and reset when you crank the truck back up, but they stay up when the key is off. Not a must-do fix, but it just kinda bugs me.

I'm also going to change out the stereo, which is easy enough, but I was wondering if you guys might have a favorite car stereo site or DIY resources for auto electronics. Thanks!

1. broken wire(s) in driver's side door bundle.

2. yes. the mirror switch can be popped out, although it might cause a little damage to the plastic door panel unless you do it from the rear. there's a plastic clip on each side of the switch which must be depressed.

3. that's normal. don't worry about it.

"1. broken wire(s) in driver's side door bundle."

I can hear the mechanism working in the door; the lock just doesn't go up or down. That's why I figure it's just hanging up or maybe a linkage or whatever came loose. Would a broken wire make it do that? Sorry if that's a stupid question...I'm not used to these newfangled vehicles...lol :D

if it tries to unlock the door, the problem might be a bad actuator, a bad latch, a broken actuator-to-door rivet, lack of lubrication, bent linkage. no way to know w/out taking the door apart.

That's what I figured...I was hoping for a "most common" problem possibly, but I guess I'll find out when I open the door up. Thanks.

mine needed the bracket that holds the solenoid replaced the whole thing was jumping up and down instead of moving the lock as i recall it was kind of a b***** installing the solenoid into the clip. i dont remember if it was the clip or the actuator i replaced but its obvious once apart

Thanks for the replies...I'll be pulling the door apart soon.

On a different note, have any of you had a part on the motor whine until it gets warmed up? My XLT has the V6 OHV motor and it does that. I'm trying to figure out what is doing it and I'm kinda thinking either the alternator or A/C compressor just from the general area I'm hearing it, but I'm not sure. It doesn't seem to affect performance at all but it's one of those "I got a new ride and what is that noise" noises...:D
