1986 Ranger 4X4
:) My buddy (also my ex)just replaced starter #2 on my 1986 Ford Ranger 5 speed 4X4... Bought this one new and it's STILL making that wretched "one of a kind" flywheel GRINDING noise! The last one that went on it was 2nd hand but looked real new. Sounded not bad for about a week, then it too bit the dust. I'm tired of asking him to do ANYTHING for me so I was investigating what it would take to get a real good look at the flywheel. I'm NOT bad with mechanics but I'm thinking that dropping the trannie to get that good look might be a little beyond me. Another thing was when we took the 1st one out it was covered in oil, I have NO idea where THAT'S coming from...
I've also got a 1988 2WD 5 speed ranger sitting out in the yard, needing a new trannie. I have a parts ranger that's an 88' 4X4 Ranger ALSO out in the yard that the ex was talking about taking the trannie out of that for the 2WD and I was doing research on that as well, BEFORE HE STARTS ANYTHING. He is VERY mechanically inclined but lacking a bit in the motivation dept.
I've learned LOT'S by crusing thru all the threads. What I've REALLY learned is that I NEED to know a whole pile more...
I'm also in the process of pouring a foundation so I'm just a tad stressed but I'm trying to maintain a good outlook. Everythings JUST ONE BIG TEST, RIGHT???
I'm sure I'll be back cruising this site again & again in the near future.
Wish me luck!

Me again.

:confused:Just came across a deal on YET ANOTHER 88 Ranger 2WD, that "might" work for that needed trannie. Guess I need to know fairly soon if that 87' 4WD trannie, that I already own, would fit or should I just stick with the 2WD like the one in it and purchase another "parts" vehicle? Comments Anybody???

Welcome to this forum! It's not that simple to convert a 4WD A4LD to a 2WD. The extension housing, and tail shaft are different. You would have to take the entire transmission apart to switch that shaft.

Hey Brooklyn

Thanks for the quick response. JUST what I needed to know. I still have yet to identify the exact trannie that need's replacing. Got the info off this site on how to do it so I'll check and then get back to the dude with the one for sale.
NOW, watcha know about concrete mixes??? LOL

welcome aboard

Welcome to Explorer Forum! Sounds like you have your hands full. Good luck in your hunt for red october. We have a section just for transmissions and a place just for ranger trucks. I'm sure searching around them will help you find what you need to know. Happy Posting!
