'94 XLT
I just picked up a used '94 XLT 4x4 (not sure if all were 4x4's or not). It has a couple problems I'm trying to sort out. The check engine keeps coming on, but I pulled and cleared the codes, and will see which ones come back tomorrow. I can work this out since I'm familiar with alot of these from the late model Mustangs.
My bigger area of concern is the ABS light is staying on. Is there a way to pull the codes for the abs system like you can for the check engine light? It doesn't come on every single time, so I'm hoping/guessing I may just have a loose connection at one of the sensors, so I'd like to see if I can pull some codes and find out which sensor is triggering this light.

I'll post pics of the new Explorer soon, hopefully tomorrow after I get home from work.

Thanks a bunch,

Hi and welcome well let me see. umm some times if ur abput a quart low on oil your check engin light will come on. So I would do an oil change if i were you cuss you never now if it was cerint. As for your abs light check all fore secncers on your hubs and clean them. If they are nice and cleen check your wiering it could be contacting your frame if it happends to be exposed if it is exposed just use some thermal or electric tayp to seel it I tend to use spray on ruber compounds if I have an exposed wier. Oh and dont forget to service your fuses and raidator to make shurr your up to date :D I hope this helps your out. :bounce:

P.S Oh I also have some tips for some noobers dont :nono: use antifreez that has phosfaits in it, it will eat your engin alive and dont use pensoil!

Actually, if you are low on oil, the check OIL light comes on, not the check engine light.....

Some times on a rair ocasin it dose actualy happens.

Oh just so you know that is the simpel trouble shooting the bad news is that you may have to replace your Powertrain Controle Modual aka (PCM) its the brain of the Electronic Engine Control aka (EEC-IV) system components.

Thanks for the welcome and info. It seems as though the ABS light cleared itself up. The Explorer was probably sitting on a lot for a while (as well as the Auto Auction site where I bought it from this past weekend) and one of the sensors was probably just a little "stuck". I think I've got the check engine codes nailed down to the EGR and possibly the O2 sensor. I'll rerun the codes this evening when I get home since I cleared them out last night. Might just need to clean out the EGR valve and the passeges in the manifold.

It is a one owner Explorer that was traded in. I'm not sure what the official color is, but it is the lighter teal green.

Hokie, Do you make it to many football games?

Do I make it to many football games? I even planned my co-op schedule to insure that I WILL be in Blacksburg every fall for the next 2 years :smoke:

I LOVE HOKIE FOOTBALL!

I see well just make shurr you use Star Tester or equivalent SCAN tool. For checking the fast codes. These codes are transmitted 100 times faster than normal codes and can only be read by Star Tester or equivalent SCAN tool :D

Hope this helps :D

I hope its noy your (PCM) and that your right it just neads to clear it throwt say :o

Good luck man I also have a Mustang (67) show car :D

By the sounds of things it sounds like the PCM is quite pricey for these Explorers, huh? What is a ballpark figure on one, even though I don't think that is my problem. I'm working on fixing up the '84 to sell it, and will probably be getting a 66-67 Fairlane or Comet, or a 67-70 Cougar to get back on the race track.

umm well let me see this is not an estiment ill have to get a book out and im not in the grage but let me tell you some info. Because of a Federally-mandated extended warrenty which covers the EEC-IV system components and because any owner-induced damage to the PCM, the sensors and/or the control devices may void the waranty, it isn't a good idea to attempt diagnosis or replacement of the PCM ot home while the vehicle is under warranty. MY sujestion is to take it to a good mecanic or a dealerservice department to check it out it could be pricey off the top of my head id say if you know what you are doing id say do it your self man. :(

Im just hopping its a simple fix for a felow X bud. Thats why I said I hope its not your (PCM) :D

I highly doubt the PCM is bad. More likely one or more sensors has an error, or wiring fault. Crank, these trucks don't have a Check Oil Light, do they? I think it's the idiot style gauge, and the check gauge light. I also fail to see how being a quart low would affect the CEL.

Like I said once in a blue moon, and I think 90-94 X don't have check oil light come to think of it ill just have to duble check when I can. I cant function very well sometimes any way I have bin up for 4 days I suffer from ensomnia so at times I suck at spelling and stuff umm sorry :(

Autotech, Yup, I'm not too worried about voiding any warranty, as this X has definitely been out of warranty for a wee little bit (162k miles). I'm still guessing I've got a sticking /blocked EGR valve. I'll know more this weekend, don't have much time to look into it any this week unfortunately.

Mbrooks,
Actually the '94 does have a low oil light, and yes the rest of the gauges are idiot gauges, like most (almost all) cars.

Hokie,
I actually did the best to plan my wedding weekend to make sure it was an away weekend. :)

I am the proud son of a German Club member of the class of 1979 from Virginia Tech, but I am convinced that JMU should have beaten Tech last season. Well, maybe not, but the JMU band is much better than the Marching Virginians :p .

Good luck with that '94 Ex Dave. My '93 ran like a dream for 5 months after I bought it, then the starter went bad, then the wheel bearings, then the back end had sag that needed to be fixed with an AAL, then the radius arm bushings wore out, then the ball joints, and now I am worried about the tranny (OD overheating), and blah blah blah.

GO HOKIES, I mean GO DUKES!

Welcome to the site fellow Hokie!!! Sorry, I can't help with your problem, I am a begginer, so a welcome will do.

VBVA: Yeah, JMU's band is a lot better, but since I don't normally listen to marching band music in my spare time (whereas I try to watch any NCAA/NFL game thats on) I'll take the football team :D.
