Hello,

Has anyone ever purchased a hi-perf crate motor or tranny for their expy? I was doing some searching last night and could not find a company that builds a direct drop in for an 02 exp 4.0 sohc. I found a couple of tranny sites though. I know about the v6 to v8 swaps but I was wondering if there was a company that specialized in the 4.0 (complete turnkey engine) and that builds one resolving the issues/weaknesses with this engine.

Thanks in advance

Jorge from NJ

I have been looking for the "beefed up" transmissions used in police explorers and cant find any. I would figure those would be abundant but apparently not.

Never heard of the beefed up tranny's before.

No one else??

I don't believe the tranny itself is any different aside from a bigger cooler and tuned for different shifting.

I believe the internals are all the same.

thought they upgraded internals to the tranny to cope with the stresses police vehicles go thru. I know the engines are the same, but have upgraded hoses and all that stuff. Think suspension wise, they upgraded the shock and coils.

we have police explorers over here for all our officers and higher ranking soldiers. they feel the same besides suspension handles bumps and pot holes really well. plus for a v6 they seem like they pull pretty hard. mines a v8 at home so i can't really compared but just a thought. the real push bumpers on these you can really PUSH with too. we move a broke down explorer with another ex with the push bar. not even a scratch on the vehicle that did the pushing

Thanks for the responses.

the explorers the police use are the same as any other one. the only thing they do is re program the ecu for more power and program the trannie for better shifts, ect. The intereors are usually the lowest option base you can get. ford chose not to do a special service vehicle for the explorer. so no beefed up trannies

you sure the suspension is the same? this thing doesn't sway around turns very much at all. granted we can only go max speed of 40mph but i cut some sharp turn and it feels like my mounty on 20s. i know my mounty rolls hella more then the these. you would be surprized how much our explorers can take of a beaten!!! speed tops at 40mph haha airborn!!!!

Well my ex is an EX special service for the RCMP and im sure it is the same. i tried to do some research when i first found this site but all i found out that was different was the programming for the ecu. If your lucky they might have replaced the shocks for something better but thats about it
