Hi there. Need some help. Getting a P0172 only, no other codes. Tks

So if the connector and the hose look good, should I replace the sensor? I check the FRP reading on the snap shot and it shows 515.001 Kpa. No idea if that's within reasonable specs. Tks

74.7 psi

515 kpa = 74.7 psi. I think there is a pressure regulator in the fuel tank that limits the pressure to about 65 psi. There is a fuel pump module that regulates the fuel pump to around 40 or 45 psi by using pulse width modulation. The fuel pressure sensor is less expensive than the fuel pump module and not that reliable. I would replace it after checking the electrical connector to it.

forgot to mention that I used a bottle of injectors cleaner for the first time on this vehicle. That wouldn't have anything to do with the code coming up right? The engine is running perfectly fine, no misfires, no hesitation, no rough running, etc

fuel injector cleaner

It's extremely unlikely that adding a bottle of fuel injector cleaner to the fuel tank would cause the fuel pressure sensor to fail. If the engine is running correctly then the fuel pressure is probably normal. I think the PCM defaults to a predetermined fuel pump duty cycle when the sensor fails.

it could be. What is weird is that when the light came on, I did not notice anything unusual, not even for second. In order to check the sensor and the hose, I'll have to pull out the manifold, which means that I'll have to order a new set of gaskets. I'll go ahead and buy the sensor since it could take a couple of weeks to get it down here in Paraguay. Tks a lot man. I really appreciate your assistance.

hi, got a new problem with my 4.0 explorer. Started running really bad with an awful fuel smell. Had codes 300, 301, 302, 303, 316 and also 174. Seems all 3 cyl on the same bank missing. Any ideas? I also noticed the last couple of months a strong noise from the timing chain during morning startup, perhaps a faulty guide. Any ideas? Tks

Engine surges at low idle and sometimes it stalls. No FC

Hi,
I am a bit lost and really need some help. My 2004 4.0 Flex Explorer is surging badly at low idle. Doesn´t do it all the time but when it does, it would even stall, especially when you shift to reverse or turn the wheels to one side. No fault codes at all. Cleaned the MAF and throttle body with no changes. Any ideas? Thought about the IAC valve but it is parte of the throttle body if I am not wrong. I would also think it would throw a code if I had a faulty IAC valve. Could a weak battery or bad flex fuel cause this?
Thanks!

timing chain rattle?

Did you fix your high fuel pressure problem?

Did you do anything to correct your timing chain rattle at engine start? Did you check the compression to see if the timing chain on one of the banks slipped?

You're correct that you have electronic throttle control (ETC) which eliminates the need for an IAC valve. The PCM closely monitors the ETC functionality since its a safety issue if it malfunctions. If the PCM detected incorrect operation of the ETC there would be associated diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

If your fuel pump has been running at 75 psi (515 kpa) for the last 10 months and it's designed to run at 40 psi it may have weakened. Have you checked the pressure lately?

Hi,
I replaced the fuel pressure sensor

About the timing chain, i had to remove the engine and replace all chains and tensioners. No additional engine damages were found. That was over 3 months ago. This surging problem started a week ago.

Have not checked the fuel pressure. Do you think this could be a fuel pump issue? Shouldnt that give me a FC? Another thing that happened was a blinking battery light. Voltage seems to be fine but my battery is over 2 years old. Could a weak battery have any influence on this?

Thanks again!

ETC motor

A weak battery has the most effect at idle when the alternator voltage is low. There are all kinds of potential problems when the system voltage is low. Your battery voltage should be about 12.6 volts when the ignition is off. If it is less than that then try charging the battery and see if the engine still surges at idle. When the engine is running and the battery is charged the voltage should be about 13.6 volts at idle. Make the battery posts and terminals are clean.

I'll do that first and let you know. Tks!!

Update: replaced the battery and also fueled the vehicle with good unleaded fuel instead of flex fuel. So far it is runing fine. I will keep you posted. Tks!!

Suggestions on Cloyes timing chain kit

Any suggestions on Cloyes timing chain kit? Are they trustable? Any other brand you would recomend that is not Motorcraft? Can´t afford their markup
Thanks!
