I've found a used 1998 Explorer for my grandson at a great price. There is one issue I'm concerned about. Everything is great except the reverse gear in the transmission. When put in reverse, the vehicle will move for about 4 seconds, then the vehicle stalls. The current owner puts in reverse, just gets it moving then shifts to neutral for it to continue rolling back. He states it just needs a neutral switch but I'm not knowledgeable on this. Anyone confirm this or heard of this before?

I really don't have much knowledge about transmissions but what he's saying doesn't sound right to me.

And second, I would personally never buy a vehicle with a transmission issue unless I had it 100% confirmed by a mechanic that it is fixable and/or won't cost you much.

Run away, a transmission is about the last kind of trouble you want to have with a car especially with what sounds like a new driver. As much as I love my mountaineer I would suggest looking for a small car so he'll actually be able to afford to put gas in it.
