high idle and engine racing

For about one month now my 1994 explorer 188,000 plus miles has been having high idle during cold starts , and now during traffic or driving , it has steadily gotten worse , and today 07/07/10 , the idle would not come down from about 2700 rpm , I got worried and shut off motor after I was unsuccessful in reducing idle speed ( 5 min. ) engine was completely warmed up and still racing idle.

1st thing I'd probably look for with a high idle would be a vacuum leak.
