high idle at startup

04 xlt... when starting no matter hot or cold the rpm goes to 2k rpm then 1k for a sec then to i think 500 rpm... is that normal on the 04?

This may not be it but I had an issue with RPM going to like 2800 RPM and staying there for about a minute before it went down. Disconnect your Idle Control Valve and see if your RPM goes super low. If it doesn't, most likely the issue is that part. Otherwise, you may also check your Throttle Position Sensor, although I doubt it's that.
