Got a quick question about a 2005 XLS 4.0 SOHC. Whenever you startup the engine the thing revs up to 2000 rpms and then slowly drops back down to around 1000 or so. Is that high startup idle normal for this model? I have a 01 Ex Sport and it doesn't do this so I thought I'd ask you guys. You have to be careful not to drop it into gear too quickly with the rpms that high you can get a good jerk. It does the same thing whether its a cold or hot start.

I have a 2002 xls and a 1996 ranger, they both do it.

My 02 does this a little as well. I would venture to say normal.

I have a 2002 XLT 4.0 and it does not do this. It starts and idles at ~1000 RPMs.

Although my '04 4.6 is not the same it does it too ~1800 rpm then drops down to 800 after a couple of miles. I would guess the combination of Outside air temp, and engine temp maybe the main factors. My guess its in Cold Start mode.
