Hey all.
I just had my truck over at my buddies hous tonight to replace brakes. I drove it there (about an hour drive) WITHOUT ISSUES, but about 5 miles out from getting home, the CEL flashed on.... and stayed on for about 50 seconds or so. It did this once more before I reached home.
I put the truck in park, and the RPMS shot up to about 2500 and hung. I shut the truck off, and started it up..... normal idle. I I give it a slow rev, it will hang again. I DID notice after the first CEL sighting that the Voltage gauge wa all the way up by the "L" in normal, and it did NOT jump as I added electrical loads to it. (Lights were on, heater on the middle setting.... i put high beams on, turned the fan up, rolled down a window while I stepped on the breaks... no movement) It also seems to be idling SLIGHTLY rough.... and when I mean slightly I mean VERY slightly.
Before you say "Check the codes" , I have never ONCE been able to run codes in this truck. I know what I'm doing, and have 3 other EEC-IV vehicles that I routinely pull codes on, with both a scan tool and the paperclip method. I've never been able to get so much as a 111 out of the explorer, no matter what I try. I have NO idea whats up with that. It will kick the idle up like it should, but then it just goes back to normal, leaving the scanner "reading codes" or the CEL off, no flashing.
One thing i KNOW is bad: BOTH battery cables are nasty as hell, corroded back into the casings and pretty shoddy. Battery is a new AC delco Unit. The charge gauge has always stayed in the middle of Normal, or slightly to the right.... never this far. I also had the "flickering" light issues when the gauge was reading correct. It takes a bunch of cranking to start the thing, but it turns over fast. The long cranking at startup I attribute to a possible bad anti-drainback valve in the tank, since it has a brand new FPR, and you can watch the fuel pressure bleed right off in about a second after it goes through the prime cycle.
Basically, this is the first CEL its ever had, the charging thing is new, and the High idle is also new. They all happened at the same time as well, so I'm guessing they are related. Other than some light pinging under heavey load/accel, the truck has always ran great.
