2002 ford explorer xlt
I have a 2002 explorer xlt 4x4 it has the 4.0 sohc

The motor has 210K on it the car was a hand-me-down from mom and dad
I am 25 years old Ive been in that car sence I was 14 and I love it.

ok so the explorer has had a new rear-end and a new transmission both installed
about two years ago. I was thinking about having the motor torn down and rebuilt or replacing with a rebuilt and Im not sure what would be the best?

I think it's better to get a reman engine and put in. Get a good one with a known company (Jasper, etc.). They should all have the bug fixes already done.
For your info, I have the same car with 262k miles and original tranny and engine. They will last if you take care of it. Do the services suggested in your manual. Don't try to make it into a street rod when driving and you should still get some good use out of it.
Good luck.
Dave

Does the motor need rebuilt or replaced? In your post you didn't say why you wanted to do that.

If it doesn't need it, spend the money on your girlfriend instead. Much better investment.:D
