I was wondering if it is normal for the 1997 model XLT to make a fairly quiet high pitch sound, almost like a belt making a little squeal. The thing is it's not coming from under the hood, I opened to hood to see how loud it really was and I couldn't hear it at all, but when I got closer to the middle side of the vehicle it got louder, it's still not even that loud but the high pitch makes it more audible. It also seems to be coming from underneath of the vehicle, perhaps the transmiission? Let me know Thanx

i am guessing the vehicle isnt moving when heard? is it in nuetral, park, or gear? does the noise increase or dissipate upon driving the vehicle?

Exactly, it just goes away when the engine is out of idle. Wha do you make of it?

Exactly, it just goes away when the engine is out of idle, like when I revv up or put it in gear and drive off. No noise noticed when driving. What do you make of it?

idler pulley.... maybe if it like squeels when you hit the gas or put load on it it goes away but at idle it squeels.... ? idler pulley.... i would say.... i think they are about 12 bucks.... mines going to it squeels real bad... .try some silicone or a good oil....

I think you're describing the normal noise of the fuel pump. It makes a high-pitched zzzzzz noise and you will notice it is louder on the driver's side.

I would guess the fuel pump also.

idler pulley, my 94 did the same thing the bearings give out. But my cost was 24

it sounds exactly like you described

Mine makes this noise when i give it gas, ive had the belts checked and the Mech cant fig out where the noise is coming from?

Theres two noises im hereing, the first one sounds like a belt and only makes the noise while giving the X gas.

The next noise is very high pitched and only does this for about five min and then it goes away!

Any know the fix for these?

Don

spray some lube on the idler pulley

yes, my 97 xlt does the same thing, it doesnt bother me really. it sounds like air comeing from a air compresser but not as loud

Don, does your first sound come on during highway speeds?? If so, it's normal. It's the throttle body sucking air into the engine.

Your second noise sounds like the IAC to me because I had this problem a couple of years ago and once it was replaced, the noise is gone.

BigWaldo, could it be the tranny?? Because my tranny had a high pitched noise and the dealer replaced some sort of flange and the noise went away.

mine does the same thing, it whines quite abit in park sometimes and i put it into drive and it just sounds fine. i dont know what the heck. it stopped for awhile, but lately it just came back. so your saying the fuel pump is bad, or that is just a normal noise

No, the Iac was just replaced and the noise is still there!
It only makes the noise when i accelerate.

The high pitched noise sounds like it's right under the the driver seat?!

Here is another possibility:

^ NOISE - "WHISTLING/HISSING" FROM
TRANSMISSION MAIN CONTROL AREA DURING
IDLE - VEHICLES WITH 4R44E OR 5R55E
TRANSMISSION

^ TRANSMISSION - 4R44E OR 5R55E -
"WHISTLING/HISSING" NOISE FROM MAIN
CONTROL AREA DURING IDLE

LIGHT TRUCK:
1997 AEROSTAR
1997-98 EXPLORER, MOUNTAINEER, RANGER

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include one chart to clarify the parts needed for repair.

ISSUE:
A "whistling" or "hissing" noise from the main control area may occur while idling in Drive and/or Reverse on some vehicles that have either a 4R44E or 5R55E transmission. This may be due to an improperly sized orifice hole in the main control separator plate.

ACTION:
Replace the separator plate with a revised separator plate. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform normal diagnosis by referring to the appropriate model/year Service or Workshop Manual.

2. Repair all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as listed.

3. Repair all transmission concerns as required.

4. Verify that the whistle/hiss noise still exists. If the condition still exists, install the revised Separator Plate (-7A008-) onto the main control. Refer to the Service Manual for proper procedure. Refer to the Application Chart for the correct separator plate.

NOTE : IF A SYMPTOM OTHER THAN "WHISTLING/HISSING" REQUIRES REPLACING THE MAIN CONTROL, REFER TO THE MAIN CONTROL CHART WITH THE UPDATED PART NUMBERS FOR CORRECT APPLICATION.
