2011 Explorer Limited
Hi, I have a 2011 Explorer Limited. Sometimes, especially at idle in cold weather, it makes a very high pitched continuous whistle or whine noise. Not sure it is coming from the fuel pump, sounds like it is fairly loud on the passenger side, especially under the carport. Anyone have any experience with this? The dealer said it was the fuel pump, they were loud like that, no big deal. However, I get the impression that he can't even get out of his own way, much less diagnose my vehicle.

Does it sound kind of like a hiss? I some times hear odd noises from my 2011 ex while its warming up in the garage.

Yes, sort of like a hiss whistle at a high pitch.

Sounds like it might be air escaping from the EVAC system gas tank pressure and leaking filler hole venting.....or something along these lines....best regards Plum

That's what I'm thinking after crawling under and listening closer. I wasn't able to locate it though. This a pretty serious problem? Planning to make the dealer crawl under and listen for sure.

I only hear the hissing sound rarely. Does anyone have a good way of letting the dealer know about the problem? Does anyone know if a EVAC system leak would be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty or the power train warranty?

I have the same sound coming from my '12 when it's idling. Like you say...it does sound like a fuel pump high pitched whistle. I was going to ask at my next oil change. I am interested to hear what you find out.

Have you had your fans checked/tested for the fan recall replacement. Ours stopped whistling after our fans were replaced.

Brought x to dealer. He said "well its the fuel pump, some of them are louder than others" I said "what? This thing sounds like a hoover vaccum with an optional street sweeper" he said "well, we have a Taurus that sounds the same way" I said " so you don't think this is loud? He paused and listened and said "yea, that is pretty loud" I said "change the pump and make me a happy customer" so I guess they are going to order and change the fuel pump. I'll let you know if the problem is solved.

Dealer replaced fuel pump and now its quiet and normal. Never hesitate to trace out any noise or rattle with the dealer and don't take foolish answers for a remedy. Ask them to change the part anyway. Had i not insisted they change the fuel pump, they may not have changed it. They were very good to me though and did everything I asked them to do. Ford has really stepped up in recent years.

Ok, so evidently it wasn't the fuel pump as the ex is still making that tea kettle noise. I have no idea exactly where its coming from unless its some sort of vac noise. Anybody else hear this? Particularly in cold weather?

its the money hissing out of your wallet from buying a new vehicle. Hehehe, just teasing.

I'm hearing a hissing sound too from time to time.
