High pitched humming sound.

Have you ever had one of those tubes (or heard one) thats a toy, and you swing it around real fast and the wind causes a high pitched humming noise?
Well, my ex decides to sometimes, not always, but a lot of the time, hum like this at idle. It can be very loud and annoying. It started right after I put in my K&N FIPK, so i thought maybe that might have something to do with it, but I don't know what. Also my dad thinks it may be a fuel pump going bad, or the alternator straining to recharge the battery because of my system? Any help or ideas?

You need to try and place where the noise is coming from. I have the same sound, and I believe that it is my fuel pump.

It is probably the IAC. Do a search.

If you give it gas and it goes away, its the IAC. Mine was so loud I could hear it out of my tailpipe.

Good thing I saw this post, mine has the same noise and it does go away when I give it gas. The sound only starts after the X has warmed up a while.

Mine does the same thing when idling while warm. I traced it to my air intake (stock). If I open it up while it's running, the hum is deafening! So I figure it's an intake problem, unless the IAC causes a hum that resonates back down intake tube.

If the sound is coming from the air intake box, it's the IAC. Usually more common when it's warm out.

Alright, I opened up my hood after the humming started to see where it was coming from and sure enough it was from my air intake. Does it matter that I have a KKM or is it still the IAC.

When I first had the "moose call", I thought for sure it was my brand new K&N FIPK (which was installed 3 days before the IAC took a dump).

I was certain that my FIPK was the problem because the sound was coming from the filter... I removed my IAC, cleaned it, and it worked fine for a day, then the noise returned. I replaced the IAC and the noise was gone for good.

Is the replacement IAC just a simple unbolt the old one and bolt up the new one process?

When you get the "humming" do you get it at all speeds or only when idleing? Mine has definately picked up a hum since I cleaned my engine a couple of months ago. It hums while idleing and any time I put the gas pedal more than 1/4 of the way down. I thought it was from my FIPK since one of the mounting holes has been broken for some time. I figured it was leaking air so I put my stock air-box back on but the humming is still there. It is a bit quieter though, but still noticeable.

I thought that since the IAC only controls the idle, that it would only make the noise at idle. If it can cause the "humming" while driving also, then at least I can be reasonably certain that is where the noise is coming from and I won't worry about it anymore. I was beginning to think that I had a bearing going out somewhere. It only showed up after I sprayed engine cleaner all over my engine and hosed it off.

Mine hums while applying gas too...but after a decient amount, it cuts off. It's the IAC.

Good timing, I just stepped in the door. I was just at auto zone asking about the IAC and the guy there told me that I dont have one. He told me to check for carbon build up inside the intake tube.

Texplorer - you would have stood just as good of chance at getting a correct answer by going to Tot's Unilimited and talking to one of the students. You most definately do have an IAC valve.

Hey RedBeard, how long have you had the new IAC, I looked at NAPA and they sell 'em for $120 is this about what you paid? I tried the whole cleaning it out (with EFI cleaning spray) and put it back it and that didn't help. Then I just tried unpluggng the IAC which dropped my idle to about 500 instead of 1100-900. When you unplug it, the noise goes away, but it's idleing real low. Arg, it's been like this in the hot months for the two years I've had my KKM Filter on. And from what I can see, the only people who get this problem are those of us who go with a KKM or K&N FIPK. Any other suggestions out there?
