Although my 05 really hates to be floored to WOT (last time I did so, the thermostat housing exploded - now fixed) my wife was driving yesterday and told me she saw the Service Engine Soon light flashing when applying liberal throttle on the highway during a pass. I scanned for codes and there were none. active, pending or historic. I took it for a drive and floored it on an on ramp. Trans dropped down to second gear and the revs came up but they stopped increasing about 1000 rpm from redline - the engine just wasn't making enough power at that point to continue accelerating. The transmission didn't shift to 3rd and the Service Engine Light flashed for a short period of time.

Still no codes stored. The transmission seems to be working ok (OD engages, shifts OK, cruise works. sometimes a hesitation when shifted into reverse) so I'm thinking I might need to replace the plugs/wires. Truck has about 120K on it and I've only had it for the last 20K or so. They are likely the original plugs and wires.

That sound about right, or am I just subconsciously avoiding admitting that I'm looking at a tranny rebuild?

I'd find out why the SES light came on before I did anything. Odd that it goes away immediately and can't be read.

Well, it flashed for a short period of time which I've heard can indicate a misfire and that the PCM will only store the code if it happens continuously.

You should have some old code in there if the check engine light came on. It does not immediately sound like a major transmission issue, though.

Nothing there, unless my code reader (actually a bluetooth ODBII dongle connected to Torque - an android app) isn't picking them up. Everything else works ok in the app though (can read real time parameters). I don't get the power loss or SES light when redlining in first gear however. I'm going to replace the plugs and wires since it's needed anyway and I'll see where I'm at.

I've had intermittent misfires due to a bad coil pack that have given me the SES and then it has gone away. By the time I could get to O'Reilly/Autozone the light had stopped flashing and the code was nonexistent. Finally had to drive it until it continued.
