Hello,
I have a new to me 98 mountaineer V6 SOHC 4.0 A4WD.
I just posted in the new member forum. Stop by and say hi.

I did search prior to posting and did not find anything exactly specific to what I am experiencing. Or the thread died and no resolution was reported back.

I have a loud humming/deep whistle sound on the highway.
Here are some specific details:

Only over 40-45mph
While accelerating and coasting (except in that 1 sweet spot between the two) I hit that spot as I am letting off the accelerator and it is silent.
The sound all but goes away if I switch into neutral. Comes right back when I switch back into D.
Occurs with or with overdrive.
Occurs with or without cruise control.
Occurs with 4WD HIGH on.
Sometimes, like 1 out of 10, it is just a little bit less loud while traveling up hill.
No difference in the sound as I turn left or right.
It seems to get louder with speed.
It seems to hold back the engine while coasting, kinda like a muffled engine brake.

I can't notice where it is coming from. My son says towards the right and I say to the back.

I just changed differential (front and back) and transfer case oil. No shavings at all on the magnets and no change at all in the sound. (Thanks Explorerforum!)

Here are a few other issues, just in case they are related somehow:

4WD low is not working. No light, no engagement (at least that I can notice).
I can feel the control trac engaging when I am in icy conditions. What I mean is I notice the front wheels grabbing. Kinda like a pulse. (Not sure if this is normal or not)
I have a metal grind right after a cold startup. Never again at anytime during the day. From the front drivers side of the engine. (Almost certain this is not related)

Where would you start looking or eliminate as the source?
Transfer case?
Torque converter?
Wheel bearings?
U joint?
Something else?

Thanks for reading this long post. I wanted to provide as much detail as possible.

Have a great weekend,

Chad

for the humming noise most common is wheel bearing /hub assy. going bad . try running it on a lift to locate if no noticeable looseness in hubs . Good luck !!!
