Well,
Wife called yesterday. Seems she was parked in front of house and went to pull onto road and some lady in Rav 4 was coming down street and hit the left front wheel. Pretty bad left front suspension damage and the left fender is shot. Front diff is not leaking so half shaft did not get hit too nard but tie rod snapped in half. Door has minor damage but will not close, has gap at top after latch catches. :( Getting estimate to pull the body a bit to line up but I am guessing it is totaled. I have pulled engines and done significant suspension work on Volvo's so I am sure I could replace the damage on this one. Wife got the ticket for failure to yield and I had dropped Collision 6 months ago:mad: so depending on what guy wants to repair it may just go to junkyard. I love the car though. 238k on it and still going strong. 50k on new transfer case. 25k on rebuilt tranny. What bad luck.
Getting quote but if too much may sell to junkyard or part out. Which we be more profitable and less time consuming? If I could get good money out of a bunch of good parts it might be worth time and trouble for shipping, etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

more then likely they will total it i could be wrong. who is at fault for the accident? and you will make alot more money parting it out then you would junk yarding it

You are getting a new car no doubt.

Wife was at fault though the lady was clearly speeding. Thus, I have to pay for repairs or decide to sell it to yard or part out. I am thinking I could find suspension parts for left side pretty cheap and I have air tools, etc and could fix the mechanical parts. That door is a different story as it will need pulling and aligning to get it to close right. I love this thing though. Should I fix the suspension and put a new fender on it and let a body shop take the rest? Probably need a new wheel too as it took the majority of the initial hit. Where is a good online source for parts for explorers? Here on the forum in the classifieds?

The whole situation sucks but guess it is time to buy a new something and part this for maximum $$$$$'s.

What a horrible Friday. :thumbdwn::(:(

Thanks guys,

Rob

for all the work your going to have to do and money for parts and all that you can find one with less miles we just got our 2002 4.6L xlt leather mint inside and out for 3700 so for a 98 and all im sure you can find even cheaper

There has to be frame damage with that. That will not be a job for a few spanners and new parts.

Is you wife ok? That's the important thing.

Hey Iamtodd.
Yep, she seems to be fine. She took a knock to the head on the front roof pillar. Had her belt on buy huge knot over her eye last night and today it has gone down and she has a black eye.

I will let the guy check it over for frame damage and then I guess part it out. Interior is in good shape and rebuilt tranny and fairly new transfer case. I need maximum money out of it to have a down payment for a used car. Guess it would be worth my time to pull parts and ship.

Is frame damage and unibody damage differnt from each other? Frame is really bad I guess and unibody to get door to line up is less costly?

It took a good knock and aside from wife's bump on the head everything is good and that is all that matters.

Thanks for all the advice on this,

Rob

dang that sux bout ur x

You either have a frame or a unibody. The Explorer is quipped with a full frame that the body is bolted on to. Most cars are unibody as are CUVs. They rely on the structure of the entire body to be the frame. It's much easier to massage a unibody than a full frame. Something that age with that many miles wouldn't be worth the time unfortunately. Trail truck anyone!? :D

i would say, kiss it good bye. by the looks of it, the a pillar has moved along with the fender apron and rocker.

A-pillar has moved? Is that the reason for the door being out with a one inch gap when closed? The latch catches fine but the top does not line up at all. The guy that towed it has a body shop and says that can be lasered and pulled but since I am footing the bill I have a feeling that will do it in. Ideally I would like to do the mechanical stuff myself (well within my abilities) and then after putting a used fender on take it and have it straightened and painted but I bet the fender needs to be off for the straightening.

Like was said, maybe a good trail truck now. :D

Just glad my wife was okay aside from knocking her head on the windshield pillar or side of the door. Just wish she had been in our other car, had Full coverage on it instead of just liability.

Thanks,

Rob

Well, thank God that it wasn't a T-bone, because that is a he## of a hit! On the business end, if you have a rear area cover, could you pm me a price for it? Color doesn't matter...

because the price of gas SUV are dirt cheap. repair it, I would put a solid axle under it.
