A lot of times you'll have to enable the 5.1/DTS out on your DVD player out of the box. Both of my Sony's came with it off by default.

That is what I am thinking. I think that maybe you could be getting the features crossed. 5.1 can mean 2 things. Input and output. 5.1 out is for surround like told by jim. But the other 5.1 is for a DVD player to input 5.1 sound. Is that what you could be referring to, the 5.1 input?

Now I see what I am doing wrong.i am going to have to buy a new DVD player.Got any suggestions?

Sony. I buy nothing but Sony for the home audio and TV's. I have bose speakers though, but everything else is Sony. If they are not #1, then #1 is pretty dang good stuff.

What kind do you have now?

Are you using the optical out? (s-video)

I can't imagine a DVD player not sending 5.1 out. Does your reciever have an auto-format-decode option?
