I have a 99 Explorer Xlt. I was considering putting a hood scoop on. I Have already modified the air box and also ran tubing to bring in cooler air. Is there any advantage to putting the scoop on besides looks?

well, if it has a scoop that is functional (meaning, it is not filled in), you can try a few things...

1) you can attempt a cold air intake from the scoop, running a tube from the scoop to the air filter, but you need to be very careful about getting water in there.

2) you just leave the scoop open to let air in. the air will come in, run over the engine and it just circulates cool air in the engine compartment, but once again, you dont want too much water in there.

you can get those little plug things to fit in the hole in the scoop which you can just stick in there when its raining or something (not such a good idea however if you go withthe cold air intake method though, heh.)

Thanks that answers my question. Where i live we get to much rain and snow, So that wouldn't be a good idea.:)

try a cowl induction. then you dont have to worry about the rain;)

well, if its a "true" cowl induction hood, then, yeah, you do have to worry about the rain, but i seriously doubt that youre gonna find a "true" cowl hood for an explorer.

if anyone even finds a fake cowl induction hood or any other hood than stock that will fit a 98' sport (black) please post it some where i ffffed up my hood using rubbing compound or any suggestion to un fffock it up it is all little scratches

duh!!!!!!!

Hey you guys, all you need to do to keep the rain out is to put some screen or like a very loose material like they do on the ridge vents for roofs on houses. take some of the filter material out of your furnace in your house and cut it to fit and attatch with either sylicone or some other adhesive that way the rain hits it and stops while still being able to let ample amounts of cold air in, aaaahhhhhhh now wasnt that an easy fix for the hood scoop blues. later,

i've been getting a lot of ideas lately, and my wife is encouraging me to do this. so i'm going to start on the fiberglass hood scoop. but i dont think i'll install it until spring.

sweeeeeetttt

I'm thinking that I might do the same, have to send some picts when you do. But seriously try the house filter idea it works for houses in hurricanes down here in nc so should work just fine on your hood scoop.

I just had a fiber glass hood done with a scoop added on to it, and it really turn out nice. I have a supercharger and I really needed to get more cool air into the engine area. If you want to see what it looks like check out the Rubicon trip report and go into the link for the photopoint pictures. I have some shots of body damage from the trip and there is one shot of the front hood area.

Paul,
ouch, that is alot of body damage. truck looks great though! that is a great looking hood.
