The battery ground cable is fastened to any convenient, well-grounded place where a big bolt is available. Often, that is at the starter itself, the cable lug secured under one of the starter mounting bolt heads. Sometimes, in order to secure a shorter ground cable length, it is fastened under a bolt head higher up on the engine, could be on a head, or intake manifold bolt even. Best on the engine, though, not some part of the body. The starter is rigidly mounted to the engine, basically, and it's ground current flow can easily travel through the engine block to the point of cable fastening. imp
