While driving on the freeway, my A4LD slips out of 5th gear (overdrive) and once, out of 4th. This is a 92 Explorer Sport 4x4. There are about 50k miles on a rebuilt trans, clutch and cylinders were new with the trans.
It was suggested (by a repair shop) that the engine mounts have gone bad and are allowing extra vibrations to cause the slip at 55mph. + speeds on smooth roads. However, if vibrations were the problem, I would think that driving over rough terrain would've caused the same slippage, which is has not.
This afternoon I replaced my transmission mount. The old one was pretty bad, however this did not solve the problem and I doubt replacing the two engine mounts will make much difference.
I tried to get a good look inside the bell housing (without removing the trans) and it appears to be clean.
I should note that there is a mysterious oil leak that I have been chasing out of my engine one gasket at a time. I have not solved this problem yet, so dripping oil may contact places and parts it should not.
Any other suggestions? From things the mechanic said, I got the feeling he was trying to rip me off (i.e., "Well, your mounts are bad and replacing them could solve the problem. But if it doesn't, you need new mounts anwyay, and we'll keep looking after that").
Thank you for any assistance.
