My horn goes back and forth, sometimes its working sometimes it isnt.

I have a 94 xlt and wondering if it could be a faulty fuse/relay. If so, can someone please tell me where it is????!!!

Much appreciated, I am about 5 days past due on my inspection.

Chances are it will be a relay or a loose/damaged wire.

When the tech hits the horn just use an air horn in your pocket or yell "HONK HONK"

:)

I vote relay - check your owners manual but I think it's on the right front fender wall under the fuses.

Had same problem on my 97 - which has basically the same relay setup for the horn.

I found the fuse, which was in the fuse panel underneath the drivers side.

Replaced the fuse, but the horn still doesn't work. Do you guys think I have to open the horn? This sucks!

one more thing, anyone know how to remove the horn on the steering wheel to check the contacts?

Be careful if you start messing with the horn pad if you have an airbag. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable and wait a couple of minutes to allow the failsafe to purge. Buy a DIY manual at your local parts store for complete instructions, or continue searching these threads for instructions. The manuals cost about $17-18...or go to the library.

When they do inspection, they check the horn?

Explorers have a dual horn. They are known for grounding themselves out. On the drivers side, unbolt the bottom of the fenderwell. Pull down, and right under the battery is the horns themselves. There are two there - one wire going to the first, then a jumper to the second. You can replace them both, or try to figure out if one is still good and just run with it.

I am guessing this si the problem since it wasn't a fuse.

Put a meter on the horn contacts to see if it is getting power...

Did you replace the fuse or the relay??? - If you only did the fuse, then you need to check the relay also. That is what normally sticks on these.

I thought the horns were on the driver's side right behind the front bumper on the 1st gen X's. That's where I remember them on my '91 and '92 anyways....
