Hey everyone, I need some help so I can achieve better gas mileage. About a month ago, when I had my old engine and tranny in the truck I was getting 11-12 MPG for about 2 months before the motor blew. Now, with my new engine and tranny (engine has 100k on it and tranny has 10k on rebuild) I am still getting 11 MPG. What can I do?
Things I have done to the truck:
1) KKM Intake, and custom tube that I made
2) New plugs about 500 miles ago
3) Wires off of my old engine. I had replaced the wires about 5k before the motor blew.
4) Cleaned MASS
5) Set TPS to .96 volts
6) Cleaned IAC valve

Is there something that can be done to help my gas mileage? Or is it just the fact that I have 5-6" of lift and 32's?

Thanks,
Andy

You could regear. I dont know if its worth the extra couple of mpg's though.

I dont have the money to regear right now. I will only regear if I go to bigger tires, like 35's

have you done any driveline checks??? Bearings, u joints, are you always in 4x4?

just repacked the bearings a few weeks ago, so they are fine, replaced u-joints on rear driveshaft about 2 months ago. I only drive the truck in 4x4 when I go off road.

You have a lifted truck, you will get ****ty gas mileage as a result.. I'm getting around 10-13 MPG right now since I'm running on 33s..

You might make sure your fuel pressure regulator is working ok. Other than that, I would agree with what was said--you're lifted, you have 32's with probably 3.27 or 3.73 gears, and you have a thirsty 4.0 OHV engine--all working against you having good mileage. 11 mpg isn't that horrible for your truck, if you got like 8 mpg that would truly be horrible.

Can you tell me where you got the KKM? Im having no luck finding any links or anything. I believe the distribution center is right here in KC.. and they have free shipping.

what gears do you have right now? I have a 94 with 7.5 inchs of lift and 32's and I get around 11 mpg also. I have 3.27 gears and just bought a rear axel with 3.73's and I hope that will help with the milage

Sounds rather low.

After my first round of mods I had a 5.5" lift, 33's and 4.56's along with a stupid wind dragging rack on top. It still averaged 17 mpg consistantly.

At around 170k on the odometer the mileage started dropping - spent a while in the 10 to 12 range. Eventually hit around 8mpg then it wouldn't start. After various checks I drained the oil and it reeked of gas. Wound up being the fuel pressure regulator, when it finally fully failed it caused the engine to no longer start, lucky for me as it probably saved the engine from blowind due to dry bearings from the fuel in the oil.

Do or have done a fuel pressure check at the rail, quick and could save you some hassle (or another engine).

Some questions also.

Did you do the mods BEFORE the last motor blew? If so were you getting better than 11mpg after the mods but before the engine going? You say the mileage decrease started a few months before blowing the 1st motor.

If that is the case the mods are not the problem, it is something different. Often times when you notice a dramatic decrease in mileage the fuel is going somewhere, and most likely the oil. Fuel in oil makes engine go boom.

If you lost mileage AFTER doing the lift/tires then blame your stock gearing.

I have about 7" of lift, running 33's, and still have the 3.27 gears. I'm averaging around 16 mpg but I was getting close to 20 mpg when it was stock.

Ok, you have the least aerodynamic generation of explorer made. You have a huge lift w/ 32 inch tires trying to be turned by an OHV engine, and stock gearing....

What do you expect???

My buddy had a 5.9 GC w/ 6" of lift and averaged 9mpg. But partially because of the huge engine...so at least you're not that bad.

Ken what do you have for the rear lift in your X?

Ryan

My lift is just the Spacer/BL/AAL so in the back I just have the AAL which gave me 2", the BL gave me another 3", and the tires gave me the last 2". Of course now I'm already planning to go higher but I have to do gears first.
